I want to see what they do with Blood Angels and Dark Angels before I pick a legion, but I bought the first three campaign setting books. I looked at the pdfs of the books and thought they were pretty awesome. Storytime for me.

Leaning towards Emperor's Children or Word Bearers at the moment. But feel bad being a traitor.

Choosing a Legion seems like the toughest decision to make, but I think I've settled on Word Bearers. Good color schemes, able to play the demonic-traitor angle, some cool special characters. The special units look neat. Only downside are no special terminator unit. I love the terminator options in 30k.

The FW staff's lore writing is better than GW's. Emperor's Children embracing perfection to offset the near total loss of their geneseed makes a lot of sense. They believed they couldn't spare any mistakes in battle because the loss of a single life was more costly to them than the other Legions. Eventually this value set became warped towards perfection for perfection's sake and let Slaanesh in. I could definitely see building and painting EC.

Death Guard were attractive from the use of terrible weapons angle. They don't seem to fear gas or chemical weapons, nuclear, etc. The rusted paint technique I see people use looks really nice. I'm not a big fan of the scythes, though.

Now I'm thinking about World Eaters again and on the loyalist side the Raven Guard are cool...oh an now I think I've talked myself back to confusion. Maybe I shouldn't pick a legion so I can stay in this superposition of anticipation forever.

This rusty style is really cool:

I picked up a Calth box today. The GW store owner really wanted me to buy an extra box. He suggested that 4 was the optimal number as then you'd have lots of weapon bits to make specialist squads with. *boggle* The store owner is a nice guy, but the GW culture pushes that extreme sales thing too much. I picked up a White Dwarf which was about basic painting technique and had a scenario for using two boxes of Calth. White Dwarf is a lot smaller than it used to be. The owner was taking down posters from the old 7E 40k release and gave me them, which is neat.

He said that the specialist games thing was, as he understood it, entirely a Forge World project. I asked him if his store would ever carry any FW stuff and he said no, that they lose money on that because of the way FW manufactures things. He also said that FW is taking over Lord of the Rings and it wouldn't be a main line GW thing anymore. None of this is new, but I was curious.

I think I want to go with Alpha Legion. I like mechanised combined arms lists. This is mostly a list diven by what I would want to paint and own more than functional, but also trying to connect to the fast attack concepts of the Alpha Legion. I wanted either RoT'd Butchers or Mor Deythan snipers. Probably need to make adjustments to wargear.

Armillus and the Apothecary ride with the tac blob in the Storm Eagle. I wanted to fit a contemptor but couldn't find room.

SteelMentor, what recipe did you use for your golds on your Alpha Legion? I tried Brass Scorpion + Auric Gold + Sepia wash but it ended up more bronze than gold. Also, get PMs it's a cool feature.

Here's the in progress Alpha Legion alpha model, following SteelMentor's recipe:

The colors have turned out well. I learned that I need to control the glaze better on future models. It's pretty easy to let it get messy and go for speed. Also, glaze is scary. The colors look a lot brighter and neon before they dry. The glazes also show your shading well, so if the underlying paint isn't well done it'll still look odd after the glaze. So next model needs to be done with more care.

I want the gold to be a bit brighter and not quite as bronze.

So here's an attempt at a list that uses the models I have, minutes the gunship I'd need to get, focused around the models from Calth. I would likely take Infiltrate as my Alpha Legion option. I like the old terminators, but lately the tartaros mark terminators have been growing on me.

The only drawback to the Cataphractii design is no good place to put prominent legion markings. I decided that for the Alpha Legion terminators, they wouldn't wear personal arms on their service shields and instead would have a very simple aleph-null. It seems more than any other legion, the Alpha Legion would tend not to have personally identifying markers of any kind.

I'm reading Nemesis. It's not bad. Neat seeing details of the assassin temples behavior and tactics. Are assassins even legal in 30k?

Also read Fallen Angels. It was bad or mediocre. Why did the dark Angels have invested librarians after nikea? Luthers rebellion seems reasonable given the cultural pathos of having your world terraformed by a galactic bureaucracy. Is that really the great secret the dark Angels are hiding?

The writing across the series is poor, so judging it on those terms is a waste of time. Does it have some bad lore ? At this point it seems all the books have flaws there. So I'm going by what entertains me. Mechanicum and Fallen Angels were pretty boring.

Also it would be great if the Lion was the traitor, but they don't seem to be telling that story unless fallen angels is a corrupted attempt to also hide the truth, as it ends with the Lion helping Perturabo.

Okay, was posting from my phone before while traveling. It's good to have a real keyboard again.

I finished Nemesis. Oh man, what a mess. When I said earlier I didn't think it was that bad, I was about 1/4th of the way in. Things actually weren't too bad, but quickly went off the rails.

- The officio assassinorum are all idiots. In every appearance they are bickering and fighting, one-upping each other. Not in any subtle or effective way, just pure passive aggression. They have no particular plan for how to take out Horus, but they decide to throw some of their very limited resources at it anyway. In a decision that boggles the mind, they choose to put an estranged brother and sister together on the team, which leads to the next point.

- The assassins are all idiots. They are in-fighting from the very start. The Culexis and Eversor are barely able to functionally contribute and unable to do any real planning. They also throw in some hacker assassin who isn't fit for field work at all - the other assassins acknowledge this and when he does get into combat he dies almost immediately (although this is late in the book, him having mostly avoided fighting until that point). The brother and sister are deep into co-dependent emotional sabotage on every page they show up on. If I had to guess what was going on, is that each temple of the assassinorum picked their worst assassin hoping to clear their books of a liability. The emotional conflicts get in the way of the mission and are also really poorly written, such that I couldn't wait until one of them died and I didn't have to read that stuff anymore.

- Most outcomes end in failure - just as planned. The Vindicare shoots his target before identifying him. We get one shot, let's take it without checking who we're shooting at. Woops we shot the wrong guy. Luc Sedirae gets his head shot off instead of Horus. Horus twirls his moustache - all as planned, I needed to get rid of Captain Sedirae because he was a pain in my butt. Horus was expecting them to shoot without looking??? The assassinorum spend their post mission meeting time counting up all the upsides of the mission disaster. Hey, we got Captain Sedirae - god job everyone, crack open the brandy. MIssion Accomplished.

- Half the book is a gumshoe mystery without a point. It follows a side story of the backworld investigator and his hard rear end boss. Oh the politics, why won't they just let me solve the crime? The story never really develops, getting cut off as the investigator is revealed to be the demon killer in disguise! Gasp! It's boring and a distraction from what we want from the book: competent assassins cleverly hunting renegade astartes...except there isn't any of that in the book so the space cops are mostly a distraction from the latex bumble squad.

- Minor complaint: Sons of Horus wearing grey? They were wearing white in Fallen Angels. By this time they should be in green. The books are all inconsistent about which marks of armor and what colors the Sons have. It's minor, but annoying and seems like an easy thing to get right.

- It's annoying the author refers to the Eversor assassin as the Garantine. Why make up another word to refer to the guy with a made up word that's already established in the lore?

Ok, sorry about the rant. I took a bunch of these books on the plane with me because they are pretty easy to rip through. I wanted this one to be good because...assassins...but it was very disappointing.

I can spoiler tag this, but I'm pretty sure everyone knows Horus didn't get assassinated...
