While we're on emulators, anyone remember No$GMB and Bleem? Good times

E: No$GMB was a funny name because it only "demoed" Gameboy Color for like ten minutes after which it reset to vanilla Gameboy and asked you to pay the author :allears:

I think the NoCash guy is still around living on welfare in Germany and writing emulators in assembler on Win95.

Free emulators that actually worked like Nesticle and Genecyst were amazing back then because not only were their predecessors kind of crappy in that they could maybe play a few games slowly with bad or no sound, but the people who wrote them often wanted money for them. Not a little bit either, but something like $20-$30 in 1995 money.

Martin Korth is still active with his GBA/DS emulator (No$GBA). Probably still wants :20bux: for it though.

Castle of the Winds owned. I had it on a disc of "BEST GAMES FOR WINDOWS 95" that mom found in the drugstore bargain bin once. It had like 300 games on it. Most of them were absolute worthless garbage of course, but CotW, a roguelike called Lad, and Missile Command were a couple of gems.

That was my favorite version of Missile Command because it had real badass music. If you lose you hear Bill Paxton shouting "Game over man!" from Alien.

I had my NES and SNES connected at the same time with their RF switches in serial. I was too afraid to turn them both on at once because I thought they would explode. Now I know nothing damaging would happen, but what would it have done? Would it have made the NES signal interlace with the SNES signal or just give you scrambled garbage?

Also my memory of 3DFX cards is hazy - part of me remembers being super excited to upgrade from a Voodoo3 to a Voodoo5, but I also recall every 3DFX card I ever had to be a buggy piece of poo poo

I started with a Diamond Monster card that had a poor man's Voodoo chipset (Banshee, I think it was called). Thing wasn't great, but it was serviceable for my lovely old computer that didn't have more than ISA and PCI slots. A couple of years later I got one of these bad boys:

(pic not mine, which is spooky as gently caress because I also got the exact same monitor as the one pictured just a year after that).

Pentium 3 500MHz, a DVD drive, came packaged with Windows 98 SE, and it had an AGP slot! Inside the slot was an ATI Rage (either a Rage Pro or Rage 128, can't remember) and man I could not wait to see what that baby could do so I fired up a couple of games and... everything looked like hot garbage. Colors and textures just didn't render properly and even the text boxes in Final Fantasy VII were hosed up. Thinking back on it I probably just had a junk card, but after days of loving with drivers and fixes and none of it working I gave up on it and managed to snag a Voodoo 3 3000 from a family friend. All of my games looked great since, even if I technically downgraded my hardware.

I did rock this one for a while though:

and I remember an ice-themed one that I liked too, but I'd always go back to the ol' metallic grey and green. Once I discovered foobar 2000 I never looked at another music player ever again.

I remember the first time playing Delta Force and accidentally killing myself with an explosive barrel and I got the message "Mak0rz got tired of life" and I thought it was pretty funny.

We also did a mission where we had to get on a helicopter at the end. When I first saw it I started to shoot at it (I can't remember if I was just loving around or if I thought it was an enemy) but I stopped once I realized it was the mission goal. When inside you were able to look around and chat for a few seconds while the chopper was flying off before the mission ended.

I looked at the floor and fired a single pistol bullet. Little did I know I earlier shot up the helicopter to just a couple of hitpoints from annihilation. It went up in flames and we failed the mission.

Thankfully my teammates thought it was hilarious.

Ok so do you remember these bad boys:

I used those things for...13 years? I still have them, it's just the cables going to the speakers are at this point more solder and electrical tape than actual wire. Someday I'll open them up and replace the wires entirely; clean off all the gunk from the million times I glued/taped the speakers/volume control to various things, etc.

I had a KOSS system similar to this. It was during my "I want to have cool things even though I wouldn't know what to do with it" phase. I didn't have much to make use of it, really. Some DVDs were nice though.

Half-Life was a whole new experience with that setup.
