Maybe Hitler & co., after having defeated their enemies, would have mellowed out and cancelled their genocide plans? :kiddo:

Otherwise Soviet control of half of Europe, while not good, was the lesser evil. Stalin of course was guilty of all kinds of crimes on humanity, but Nazis winning wouldn't have made things easier for Ukrainians et al. Maybe for some nationalities who would have benefitted from divide and conquer policies like Slovaks did at the expense of Czechs (or so they hoped at the time).

What's even weirder is Kremlin's explanation:

The Daily Hail article of course doesn't say more than that it's a government official. Eurovision is a public broadcasting alliance so it might just be the Russian public broadcasting company's representative commenting when asked. OTOH Russian media is tightly controlled by the government and they also try to control international perception of the country (see the troll factories) so it'd fit the government's interests.

Stay strange, Eastern Europe

quote:

A vegan cafe in Tbilisi has appealed for public solidarity after being invaded by alleged ultra-nationalists wielding grilled meat and sausages.

More than a dozen men stormed into the Kiwi cafe in the Georgian capital on Sunday evening, the cafe said, shouting and throwing meat at patrons.

A brawl erupted but the attackers fled before police arrived.

The cafe has appealed for public support, saying it was no prank but a case of intimidation by neo-Nazis.

It said it was already the target of some local hostility due to its patrons' alternative lifestyles - "the way we look, music that we listen to, ideas we support, and the fact that we don't eat meat" and backing of causes such as rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

I wish we had vegan gangs attacking normal bars with delicious grilled vegetables.

A few thousand professional soldiers maybe able to hold a port or an airfield from a sudden takeover, but for defending an entire country you might just as well not have an army. It's just not feasible without conscription. Professional armies are okay if you don't have actual borders to defend and only need your army for overseas deployments, though.

Jesus loving Christ, Russian orthodox church is terrible even when it tries to appear tolerant of other religions
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37115746

quote:

Regional Muslim leader Ismail Berdiyev suggested all women should undergo female genital mutilation but later withdrew the remark.

But a senior Orthodox Christian priest, Vsevolod Chaplin, had backed him.

In a Facebook post (in Russian), Archpriest Chaplin expressed "my sympathies for the mufti, and I hope he doesn't retreat from his position because of the howls and hysterics which will start now".

"We Orthodox Christians have different traditions - but that never stopped us respecting the traditions of neighbouring peoples," he wrote.

He said FGM was not necessary for Orthodox Christian women "because they're not promiscuous anyway". But he approved of the mufti's statement that God had created "woman so that she could give birth and bring up children".

"Feminism is a 20th-Century lie," he added.

Now please excuse my howling and hysterics, I'm just too deep in 20th century lies to have the same level of understanding of women that a celibate man has.

Swedish armed forces have been at full :dogbutton: mode since last week. Swedish military has been having some training operations on the island of Gotland and while the full picture is still very hush hush, reportedly they have met mysterious Russians there first pretending to be tourists casually asking for directions, but then continuing to ask more specific questions like what unit they belonged to. What's interesting in this report is that they mention that the Russians moved around in car/cars with Russian license plates, so these are not exactly top secret super spies. Likewise there have allegedly been Russians snooping around in northern Sweden. During one international exercise last year one officer was approached in a pub, shown a photo of his family and presented a barrage of questions. As a result of all this Sweden has now decided to make the unit of 150 soldiers on Gotland permanent immediately instead of 2018, and Swedish commander has been openly saying that Russians are threatening Sweden's security (without telling how) while Russia ofc disapproves such false insinuations.

The last time Swedish military was panicking because of Russia was in 2014 when they were looking for a minisub in front of Stockholm, but no conclusive evidence was ever presented to the public of a foreign (Russian) presence. These current reports are much easier to take at face value. Is Russia updating her gameplan for a war in the Baltic? In the case of a Russia-NATO conflict Gotland would be vital for Swedish neutrality as well as for both Russian reinforcements to Kaliningrad and NATO reinforcements to the Baltic states. But intel tactics this brazen seem so out of touch, it's as if Russians were trying to intimidate Sweden rather than just gathering intel.

Russia is unlikely to invade Sweden unless there is a general war in the region. But think of this: you have this neighbour that you have no actual quarrels with, but you know he's an rear end in a top hat anyway. Then one day you surprise him trespassing on your property, looking over the fence between you and another neighbour - one who you know is this shirtless rear end in a top hat's nemesis. When you confront him, he walks away and yells "I never was there!" At the very least you're going to install some cameras to your frontyard after that. Probably barbed wire as well.

AceRimmer posted:

What's the usual garrison that these 150 troops are being added to? Doesn't seem like much for such a large island if it's just them.
edit: Looks like there is a Home Guard battalion usually stationed on Gotland too.

There's been no permanent garrison force since 2005 if I'm correct, all there was between then and now was a reservist outfit - which couldn't actively keep an eye out, but back then it wasn't deemed necessary. Note that Sweden probably still isn't expecting a Russian naval infantry brigade to land on the beaches next week, at least for now they just seem to want to have some troops stationed there to secure restricted military areas and send a message because Russians have been all over the place and generally insufferable lately. Or... they are expecting something but they can't allocate more than that because Swedish armed forces is underbudgeted nowadays, so they just left a tripwire. :tinfoil:

Good work, BM and B'cat!

Have any governments outside Kremlin (and Kiev) given official statements yet? It doesn't seem like the governments who lost citizens in the attack, especially Netherlands and EU, can any longer avoid putting the blame on Russia, but OTOH what can be done? It took a long time to get any kind of closure to Lockerbie, and even that was the result of Gaddafi unexpectedly wanting to approach the west (and finally Gaddafi's fall), something that is unlikely to happen with Putin or at least cannot be relied upon.
