So I'm thinking of building a new computer and I wanted a reality check on if it's really worth it. Currently I have 3570k at stock speed H7 cooler 16gb RAM Evga 970 1tb 840 evo PSU is a goon recommended modular that's a year or so old. I game at 1440 and the 970 is pretty good, but the card has some bad coil whine and since I have a r5 case it's pretty noticeable. Tl:Dr - should I build a new thing or is the 3570k still good enough and spend that on upgrading to a 1080 when OEMs are out.

Even overclocked, that chip isn't bad today but if you upgrade to a 1080 it won't be able to reach its full potential compared to if you had it with a Skylake K-series chip. It will definitely still be an improvement over the 970 but I would probably spend $300-400 to upgrade the platform before spending $600+ on a graphics card. I've never gotten around to OCing. I don't think I've been CPU limited. I guess I'll keep the mobo and cpu for awhile longer and up the GPU. Thanks friends.

Just a reminder to replace old power supplies! My friend called and asked what I was doing because his computer stopped working. We replaced the PSU with a new one, recommended from this thread. He said he was glad I fixed his computer. I said I'm glad his house didn't burn down.

Anyone have any headset recommendations? I had a Turtle Beach x12 for like 5 years but then it died, and replaced it with another x12, but it is definitely not of the same build quality and I'd like to find one that is a bit better.

I went from a stock cooler to an H7 with a 3570k, and when I switched to the H7 I also overclocked to 4.4. Temps still dropped by like 10-15 °F

i7-6900k vs i7-6700k for video editing... Is the price on the i7-6900k worth it over the performance? My friend is interested in building a rig for 4k video editing. He has this so far, and would welcome feedback. Based on his budget and needs, I feel like the 6700k would be a better value proposition. Also, can anyone comment about doing an external RAID setup for video editing vs an internal? He uses Avid for editing. Just put parts together last night for a friends build with a 6800k. Posted first time we pressed the power which is a good feeling. One of the ram sticks wasn't all the way in but we were able to get it in. Also holy poo poo the nh-d15 is huge. Had to bump the graphics card down a slot from the cooler. Will having a card in the second pcie slot vs the first slot cause any performance decreases? We also have a pci wifi card in a 4x slot Tonight we install windows

I suppose we didn't actually try putting it in the first slot because it didn't look like it would fit. I can try tonight - need to take it out anyway to get access to some sata ports. Looking at the Mobo manual it looks like the second x16 slot is 2.0. I'll have to move the card down to the third slot which is 3.0. How much clearance would be minimum between CPU cooler and card backplate if I can get it in slot 1?

Okay, tested the graphics card in the first PCIe slot, and it fits... Barely. Is the backplate of the card too close to the CPU cooler or will that be fine? Nothing is *quite* touching, but its very close, maybe 1-2 mm

So in the BIOS if I set the ram speed to its xmp (ddr4 3000) profile it sets the BCLK to 125 and core multiplier to 31 (from 100 and 34 respectively). Is that fine? Any articles where I can read up on this?

Cross posting from oc thread: Just put together a media editing computer for a friend with a 6800k and x99-a ii board with 4x16 ddr4 3000 corsair lpx ram. When I enable the xmp profile it says BCLK to 125 and when I try to boot up it says overclocked failed and kicks me back to bios. Any suggestions?

Yea I don't know what that reading was about, i restarted and it's now down at 1.32 and I did the prime 95 test that says it does some memory stuff and it stayed under 1.32 Seems to be all set now

If I have a 3570k with 16gb ram, SSD and 1070, at what point would it actually make sense to do a new build? I replaced the PSU a few years ago since the original was 5 years old. I have it oc'd to (I think) 4.2ghz with an h7 cooler. My main concern right now is that my tower (r5) is huge, and doesnt make sense for only having a single SSD and no optical drive. Are there small cases I could rebuild into? Is that worth it? I have a z77-pro4 atx Mobo.

Would a 8700k be feasible for a gaming build in a node 202? I have a gigabyte 1070 G1 I'd bring over too I have a 3570k now in a R5, but I only use a single SSD so the case is way bigger than I need and I'd love a case with a smaller footprint.
