One of the saddest TCC stories was the guy who talked about his dad crack parties and that it was totally ok his kids were in the house because they were upstairs sleeping. That one was great. As I recall, he was indignantly defending their "responsible" use of crack. Did that ever reveal itself as a troll? I can't recall.

Multiple experts attested to Bryant having a sub-70 IQ, and I’ve always found that assertion suspect. He has never seemed quite that impaired, to me. I haven’t studied him as much as I have some other killers that interest me, so I might just not have the full picture.

Listen, bro. Bro. Okay, listen. Okay? Listen. It's called ketosis. You eat a lot of hot dogs, and like, your body changes. Because of the hot dogs. Okay?

I have multiple coworkers on the keto diet. One has lost like 50 pounds, and is keeping it off, so far. Another, who is like 5’8” and 340 pounds, is still 340 pounds. At work, he’s sticking to the diet. I don’t see him cheat (well, didn’t see him cheat - I think he’s slipping, lately), but he seems to be spinning his wheels. Then, I talk to him about the diet, and the picture clarifies. He doesn’t count calories, he doesn’t weigh himself, he will argue endlessly about how one calorie of fat requires less effort to burn than one calorie of carbohydrate, because of how ~his body~ processes it, he thinks the body can absorb infinite amounts of vitamin C as long as you are [doing some obscure diet thing], and so on. If he would just cut the bullshit and apply his diet discipline to reducing caloric intake, rather than chasing fads (he also fasts, and somehow loses no weight), he’d probably be shedding pounds.

Not technically a SomethingAwful saga.

The problem with SL is that it ended up being basically nothing else. In theory people could reinvent themselves however they wanted, build whatever they wanted, and share it with others. In practice people just kind of made their lands invite only and then threw nothing but weird sex parties all day.

They reinvented themselves as sexually desirable millionaires who spend all day engaging in orgies. That’s what most of us would reinvent ourselves as in real life, too, if we could. Seems both predictable and reasonable, to me.

Second Life was cool and amazing, early on, and always had tremendous potential. I think the people in charge didn’t know how to realize that potential. They were good at crafting a cool cyber world, but not so good at guiding it.

Spanning 2004 to 2013, and an additional fifteen pages of archives for "Monty Hall Problem/Arguments." Yep. That's pretty great. It starts right out with an argument over the phrasing of the question. The question specifically says, "The host opens a door to reveal a goat," and someone manages to argue for pages about, "But what if the host doesn't open a door that reveals a goat?" Another dude keeps trying in vain to explain that it does not matter whether the host could open a door that doesn't show a goat, because that is not the scenario being discussed.

I saw people just completely drop the site because the moderation did nothing to stop the outright bigotry that was running rampant back then. They let all the proto-CHUDs fester instead of just banning them like they should have and they destroyed pretty much all the sense of community this site had, which despite any flaws it had actually drew people to the site; its what brought me here for example and I doubt I was an outlier.

SomethingAwful was at its very peak when it was at its most racist and socially lovely. Twin Towers gifs were hilarious (?), and threads were dedicated to mocking fat, disabled, and brown people. Reddit became arguably the biggest social force on the planet mostly through a policy of letting people be absolute scumbags, and still thrives on that, today. People being assholes is not the reason this site is dying.
