MrWilderheap posted:I feel like I missed all this making GBS threads on the white working class when it was happening. Or does calling out Trump's rhetoric as racist count as demonizing all white people? i'm still not convinced the white working class, rather than the landed white middle class, the elderly, and a lack of dem/progressive/leftist/minority enthusiasm for clinton, were responsible for the results everybody on the right and on the far left keeps saying it but none of them provide me with anything other than anecdotes and spite when i ask them to prove it it smells a lot like everybody just buying into a narrative the right has been using forever Baku fucked around with this message at 01:36 on Nov 12, 2016 |

Admiral Ray posted:You can check the exit polls but small towns/rural folks overwhelmingly voted for Trump. Suburbs went to Trump as well. I don't doubt that, what I'm curious about is 1) if it's actually different than how they turned out predictably for the gop in almost every other modern election 2) whether "suburbs went to trump" should be taken as an indicator of how the "working class" or white poor think, because the city mouse/country mouse narrative of rich and poor is some real hokey bullshit (as a person who lives in a rural area with a low cost of living and a bunch of millionaires who voted for donald trump)

radical meme posted:At this point, it seems like a truism that U.S. capitalism's rush towards global trade has scarred the American working class; all of it, not just white working class. It's also true that part of the offshoring is definitely due to U.S. regulations and wage requirements. I guess Trump could remove all regulations and get rid of the hourly wage all together. Do we really want Cleveland to have the air quality of Beijing and everyone working two jobs just to make the house payment? There's trade offs that are going to have to be made, I'm just not sure how ready the U.S. workforce is to make them. They don't want to pay any trade-offs and they want something that's never, ever going to happen and all the while as we fight about it robotics and artificial intelligence are improving to make it so there's literally no use for unskilled labor in the marketplace sooner rather than later Submit to death already dude

The Saurus posted:And Trump is better than Hillary if only because he is turning back a few of the tenets of neoliberalism, like global free trade, the drug war (at least on weed) and open border[illegal if necessary] mass immigration (which under capitalism is just a ploy to increase the reserve army of labour and drive down wages and conditions, with accusations of racism as necessary for opponents). My extremely socialist friend, I advise you at least wait and see if Trump actually "turns back a few of the tenets of neoliberalism" once he's in office before you declare that Donald Trump, the Republican President-Elect of the United States, is your ally.

HUGE PUBES A PLUS posted:I literally have a Sandernista on FB right now telling me the DNC wanted the media to cover Trump for free because they wanted Trump to win the election, therefore stealing it from Bernie Sanders. I got in a argument with a Dem volunteer last night who believes Bernie Sanders was the main reason that Clinton lost the election, and that he is a misogynist who should be ashamed of himself for getting Trump elected. It is his sincere belief that every "self-entitled millennial" who voted for Stein or Johnson because they love weed and hate "the establishment" only did so because Bernie Sanders rabble-roused them, and that they would've voted for Clinton otherwise. He does not believe the Clinton campaign committed any strategic or logistical errors, and that Clinton was actually a perfect candidate.
