Here's a metaphor you can maybe relate to more. Pseudofolliculitis barbae is the name for the bacterial rash that men can get on their face from shaving. While white men sometimes get mild razor bumps due to old razors, acne, etc, 80 percent of black men get Pseudofolliculitis barbae specifically every time they shave. It's a problem I struggled with before I transitioned and lasered that poo poo off.

Because this problem is widespread among black men and rare among whites, there's a ton of products marketed specifically to black men to either ease or replace shaving your face. This stuff is formulated to deal with the specific bacterial infection pain that comes from shaving for black men. Yeah it'll make a white guy's bumps feel better, but it's not primarily for that.

Now imagine a product you've used all your life to help you shave (partially to meet white people's expectations of personal grooming) starts adding whiten guys to its ads and comparing common razor bumps to a problem unique to African American men. You wouldn't feel the least bit like your problems were being claimed by whites? Like you were being pushed out of your space? It's the gentrification of grooming.

Black women have long had to go to extremes to make their hair meet white peoples standards lest it hurt their career or social life. Do you not see the problem in then turning around and telling white women their hair is just like ours?

It's a tough spot for the creative staff. White supremacy and the resulting exclusivity absolutely is a part of the source material, and for specific reasons. On the other hand, locking actors and actresses out from a piece of prestige award bait based on race perpetuates an ongoing problem in Hollywood.

If the characters are written in a racially aware manner (and I've not seen much of the show yet), then I'll extend good faith to the writers. If it's a "palette shift" of what would have been an identical white characters, then it reeks of production meeting a quota-for better and worse.

If you want to have an honest discussion, what do you actually object to about this. It's pretty normal specifically in demographic research to contract group labels this way. I can only imagine they selected "Trans people" because "transgenders" isn't a real word and there was no established term in the field, whereas "blacks" and "latinos", for better or for worse, have a long history of usage in demographic study.

Anytime you encounter a prostitute or exotic dancer flip a coin. Heads? That person is a slave. It's insanely common. I wonder how much of the reaction to this story in particular is that she was a domestic slave rather than a sex worker. It certainly adds a layer of "closer to home" to it.

Sheriff David Clarke is now officially assistant secretary of the DHS. I actually think this is an improvement because the DHS has a ton of bureaucracy to keep him from changing/disregarding policy and procedure on a whim like he does in Milwaukee, and federal appointees have much more potent oversight than "hope Scott Walker does a good thing, ever". Maybe people will stop dying in county jail constantly now.

As an assistant secretary, how much damage is he even in a position to do on his own? I know there's probably going to be 100x the "race traitor" hot takes now when he says something stupid though.

Not to defend any other claim the rear end in a top hat is making, but it kind of is. Julia Serano goes into a pretty nice history of its use and the recent trend against its use.

She's citing people like Kate Bornstein to support this usage which doesn't pass the smell test with me since Bornstein also advocates using "tranny" as a primary identity word for trans people.

The earliest usage I can find is The International Journal of Transgenderism, which is the journal of WPATH. But it was named that back when WPATH was still called the Harry Benjamin Society, a name denoting the outdated belief that being transgender results from a mental developmental disorder.

What I'm getting at here is that its roots are absolutely in identifying trans identities as a disorder. We can debate reclaiming words (there's even a thread for it), but I'm not a fan of reclaiming tbh and it especially doesn't belong in the mouth of a piece of poo poo like the insect court.

edit: also, as far as I can tell with search, this is not only your only post in this thread but your only post about transgender issues at all. Did you just google the first blog you could find that mentioned the word so you could score points?

Depending on how nappy/kinky it is, you may also have success with headwraps. They're the bomb when you ain't got no time to untangle your hair or do twist outs or any other styling, just fold it into a nice shape with or without your hair showing, and go. Just make sure it's a proper wrap with the right kind of fabric (wax coated cotton), so it will style and hold it's shape right.

Shockingly, my wife, even with her type 4C hair, didn't own any wraps until earlier this year (just a little do rag for sleeping in to prevent tangles), and she decided to try them out since she sometimes got frustrated with having to spend a lotta time doing twist outs before bed so her hair would be tractable in the morning, aaaaaaaand now she's hooked on them and loves the ease of getting ready to go out with them. We found a nice site that sells some gorgeous wraps that included video tutorials on how to do different styles, which is what helped sell her on the idea.

And yeah, thirding that you gotta get a Black hairstylist, wypipo and asians just ain't know what to do with Black hair. In a pinch, you can see if there's any Dominican hairstylists near you, as lots of Dominicans have fairly nappy hair and they will usually know how to cut and style it properly (you can seriously type 'Dominican hair salon' into google and it may show some local to you).

VVVVVVVVVVVVV
OMG, def throwing some money their way on payday next week.

I'm like somewhere between 3A and B but closer to A, and way too pale to pull off headwraps. I'm only 1/4 (and 1/4 blackfoot) and my hair is p much my most black feature. I aborted on an attempt to grow locks before I transitioned too because even though they came in super naturally (I p much just ripped them in a little bit and let them go, none of the crazy backcombing and waxing stoner kids do) it was drawing a lot of comments from both white and black acquaintances that made it clear that no one on either side understood why I was doing it (which was that I'd given up on finding a stylist in white-rear end Madison that could handle my hair at all :sigh:).

My hair is pretty much a microcosm of my relationship with blackness. Until I was ten I thought I had a "jew fro" because my mom "protected" me from the knowledge I was black (granted at the behest of my black grandfather who told her never to contact them again or tell me about them, that's some poo poo). After she finally told me my hair was still just a tangly puffy mess because my mom had no clue how to care for it so I was just using the Aussie products everyone else in my house used. In high school I gave up and shaved my head. Then I didn't cut it again until I was 20 (which was 5 years later cuz I skipped a grade then didn't get into any schools I could afford on my first try after graduating). Then I bounced around from stylist to stylist never quite finding anything that worked right before giving up and starting the locks. Then I had to abandon that, then I transitioned (fortunately I got the locks out without too much cutting so I had a head start on growing my hair out) and now I get to fight with finding a stylist that is trans friendly (and can handle a masculinized hairline) in addition to multiracial friendly.

So basically the story of having no clue who I am and my mom not having the ability to support me outside of her own white context.
