I don't know what model it is, but I guarantee the USAF wasn't buying the good one when they were on a "let's replace everyone's desktops with laptops" kick that lasted for like a year before they realized how dumb it was.

Yeah, I think that makes a much bigger difference than almost any (reasonable, modern) resolution bump.

I'm not giving DICE/EA any money until a game is reasonably playable. They've been burning me since the mid 2000s. The open beta was fun so I do plan on getting it, but not at release.

BF1942 with a few of their DLCs for me, I liked how planes, tanks, boats and everything were all integrated and worked well together.

And the absurd collection of vehicles. I miss having a one-man crewed aircraft carrier that you could beach for no loving reason, or carpet bombing in the B-17. The F-15E and Su-34 in BF2 were pretty loving great too.

It used to be pretty popular, with several hundred people on at most hours of the day, but the game is over 20 years old at this point and was looking dated a decade ago. The steam release was also weird, because legacy users couldn't transfer their stats over which didn't help longevity.

I upgrade so infrequently that I just assume CPU/mobo/RAM are a same-time combo. I alternate those with a new GPU. So one purchase every 3-5 years, it seems. And a new case about every decade; gearing up to replace this Antec 600 that I bought in 2010.

All the versions of BF2042 on steam are $20 off, so I grabbed it. Played about 30 minutes, enjoying it so far. Only hiccup is when matchmaking put me in a game that had about 40 seconds left.

I've played quite a bit over the weekend, and I'm kind of torn. I like every map I've played. I don't know when the last time that happened was. Portal is, in fact, neat. The game is far less buggy than I expected...I've had one crash (a few minutes ago), and twice some weird ADS problem that goes away after death. I like the engine a lot. What I dislike is the blatant ripoff of Apex Legends and the stupid character catchphrases. That whole specialist nonsense is just a waste of time. The scoreboard is absolute dogshit. As far as I can tell, there's no way to switch squads (so if your 3 bros are all AFK, sucks to be you), figure out k:d, or even see how many times you've died. Every time I hit "tab" I'm just instantly in a bad mood because I'm used to how every other BF game was. Gameplay itself is really fun, but the wrapping they put it in is just so irritating I don't know if this will replace BF4 for me or not yet. Oh, and still no official notice on whether the game will ever have joystick support...what the gently caress.

I think that's just the HD version. I think they got rid of it for the DE. In any case, I beat every campaign that came with DE in less than 20 days. 100+ hours though. I don't have lords of the west and I've only completed the longshanks campaign in dukes or whatever

That's correct, and it's why I haven't been playing DE. Seems like they could've made it transfer over. :(

Internet Wizard posted:

Removing k:d from the game’s displays sounds like a net gain, especially for a game like Battlefield where entire matches can be ruined by having too many k:d tryhards pretending to be Sniper Wolf off on the edges of the map

Those people tend to get hosed up, so I still think it's a loss. I'm not really a k:d tryhard but I do like to try to keep it above 1. I think I'm going to end up back with BF4...I can't kill an afternoon with this game, I just get annoyed by all the dumb poo poo (ANGEL DOES IT AGAIN), the AFK or just terrible squadmates that I can't do anything about besides quit the loving match, and the wonky attachment system. I like the hotkey to swap stuff, but poo poo I've unlocked and equipped isn't showing up half the time in-game. The gameplay is fun, but I spend so much time fighting everything it's wrapped in that I just get fed up after 2 or 3 matches.

Edit: They made it feel like a console game. And that is not a positive change.

I had fun being the AWACS for some goons on a strike mission. It was gloriously uncoordinated, and 3/4 members of one flight straight up flew into the side of a mountain on ingress.

I should do that again sometime.

That is fantastic, and exactly what I would expect from a modern fighter pilot. Not a dig at all, but it's more or less how they have to operate if they don't have C2.

We used to bring one or two on rides when we did Red Flag or WSINT, and their impression was always some variation of "eye opening." Usually with more expletives.

One thing I like getting to do in a debrief is let the flight lead compare what's on his screens to what's on mine. There are a few key moments where you can see a light bulb go off and poo poo starts to click.

Chivalry 2 is a good game. It is largely more of the same as the first one, but it also takes some of the shittier sides of the first one, like dragging attacks, and making them part of the game, thus removing some of their gimmickness and fuckiness.

Game's been out a year, but now it is on Steam. We've been playing it with Air Goons, and the 3v3 mode is a lot of fun. The game doesn't require millisecond timing windows for succesful attacks, but rather uses a fairly neat system where you can do really well despite not being the highest CPS nerd.

The horses are cool, and cavalry charges are loving devastating to stand in front of.
