So I'm guessing that the death of net neutrality probably won't affect people in the EU, right? Because the EU has previously gone "lol gently caress off" at attempts to introduce filtered/throttled internet access. But I guess the instant the UK leaves the EU (if it actually happens lol) then our government will go "here you go Murdoch, here's the anus of everybody in the country. Go hog wild; no lube."

Honj Steak posted:We at least have the advantage that usually there is quite a large selection of providers available, so competition makes this less blatant than in the US, where in rural areas you have service monopolies everywhere. The UK basically has Sky (owned by Murdoch, has its own competitor to Netflix called NowTV), BT (who just today entered into a deal with Sky to share the NowTV service), PlusNet (owned by BT) and Virgin Media. So once net neutrality dies in the UK, it's pretty safe to say you'll either have to use Virgin Media (if it's available in your area) or enjoy getting hosed over if you want to use any streaming service that isn't NowTV. And it's probably gonna die soon, because the Tories are already peddling the lie "you're paying so much for your internet connection because of people that watch Netflix! If we scrap net neutrality you'll save money and they'll pay extra!". And even a cursory glance of that statement will make anybody not hard-of-thinking go 'lol'.

Durzel posted:Technically BT, PlusNet, TalkTalk et al use Openreach who have been forcibly split off from BT. So in theory they should all be competitive. Yeah but they said that about energy providers, and it turned out they were all colluding but the government decided to do nothing about it since that would mean earning slightly less in their dividends.

Mistle posted:Imagine how many satellites would be destroyed by laughter-induced balls damage: Nah it's more likely that the Tories will just outright ban protesting. Remember, the UK parliament recently had a vote on whether or not the government should be allowed to bypass parliament and the House of Lords, and just enact legislation. When parliament inevitably retained its sovereignty, they were labelled traitors by the press, and the far right started sending death threats to MPs. Previously, when the high court ruled the same (parliament is sovereign), high court judges were called "enemies of the people" by the Daily Mail. British media is currently straight-up demanding that we get rid of parliamentary democracy, because a dictatorship is allegedly "the will of the people".

There are cheaper and healthier ways to spend taxpayer money than on packs of Oreos, which is small ways actually probably contributes to the cause of some peoples’ unemployment in itself. Jesus christ there isn't an epidemic of poors living off of Oreos; the vast majority of people on welfare eat normally and enjoy the occasional treat to make their lives less miserable just like you and everyone else. EBT cards are retarded (and expensive) enough.
