i'd really like to see someone like the zodiac killer or santorum or Huckabee or any of the other hardcore moral-majority fuckers come out and give a glowing endorsement of the AHCA because "It will literally help hundreds of thousands of devout Christian believers reach their eternal reward that much sooner. And really, isn't that the most awesome gift that an executive can give to his constituents?"

I mean I know contemporary evangelical Christianity is a death cult, but something like the above doesn't even seem too on-the-nose for them at this point.

I feel like that's part of the problem right there - so many people have been conditioned to see any form of government assistance as some kind of terrible thing that has to be avoided at all costs or else you become one of them and that's a fate worse than death.

guess what my dude, you're absolutely asking for a government handout, and that's okay because you've already paid for it. unless he's somehow avoided paying taxes for his entire adult life, he's been making annual tithes to the government to pay for a lot of stuff, and one of the big things it's supposed to pay for is support and assistance during a natural disaster. this guy shouldn't feel any guilt at all about receiving support from the govt because of a situation that was completely outside his ability to influence or control.

that's got to be one of the best tools in the R tool chest, the fact that they have psychologically conditioned people to reflexively reject any govt utility outside of limitless defense spending.

but because the scorpion was independently wealthy from the privatization of numerous social programs that previously provided a safety net for the disadvantaged, and thanks to a few well placed donations with some high ranking government officials, the scorpion was plucked from the back of the sinking frog by a bald eagle that he paid to follow him and monitor him from the air 24/7. he could have just had the eagle fly him over the river in the first place, but he enjoyed making time to personally twist his stinger into the backs of those he oppressed.

if you can't fit a character's origin story with the opening title credit montage of the cartoon (ex. the original TMNT cartoon, or Freakazoid), they aren't important enough to have an origin story.

not in contemporary times, but it is at least internally consistent that the original descendants of this country's protestant founders would be leery of Catholicism jumping the pond and ruining their city on a hill, if only because the protestant founders were the 17th century version of the Mormons, holding unpopular religious views and literally fleeing across the pond to escape papal authority in the first place.

I guess all these idiot tormp voters are a pretty neat impromptu social experiment about how incredibly awesome white privilege is in the U.S. these people are so desperate to count as white that they willing voted for the candidate who is going to forcibly export them out of the country, on the off-chance that maybe their vote would somehow prove their inherent white-ness and earn them an honorary doctorate in being white.

i don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but it's absolutely insane how american evangelicalism has become a blatant death-cult.

my boomer parents both firmly believe that trump is a good and righteous man because he's the only politician willing to usher in the rapture by ensuring that all the apocalyptic prophesies about isreal come true. they'll openly tell you there's good jews (orthodox of course) and bad jews (every other denomination) and that trump is allied with netanyahu because he's a good jew and only by supporting him is there any chance of the biblical rapture happening. they're not shy at all about the theoretical loss of life that is explicit in the terms of the rapture; their attitude is "well everybody has had their chance to believe in the good word and accept jesus as their savior and if they have decided not to do that, it's no skin off my back. they made their choices and i'll be going to heaven when i die so what do i care". anyway a lot of other evangelicals in their age cohort seems to agree with this general interpretation of values and it basically means there's a non-trivial amount of voters that are voting for trump explicitly because they expect he's going to kill a whole lot of people and in so doing trigger the rapture.

like, there's "trump voters realizing they're going to die under trump" but i feel like "trump voters explicitly voting for trump because they expect to die under him" is just next level insanity.

yeah, that's been the case since i was in my early 20s and my youngest brother came out and my parents (predictably) treated him like poo poo. i had moved out when i was 18 and had been living on my own for several years, so when he came out and told me what they said / did to him, i had him move in with me and told my parents how badly they had hosed up, treating their own son like this. i mean, they weren't cool with me either, but since i'm cis-het i didn't have to deal with the kind of mind games they apparently started dropping on him.

for years i think i spoke to them maybe once or twice in a given year. when my wife became pregnant and i told my mom, she wanted to do some magic 180 and pretend like they could just be cool fun grandparents that would be involved in my daughter's life, and it was cathartic getting to tell her why that was never going to happen and they could gently caress right off.

it was probably a year or two ago, but there was an article posted about some research that was done that considered an annual cohort of med-school grads from across a variety of different schools, and observed to which cities / areas they were most frequently settling in after their initial rounds were complete and they could begin residency.

something like 70% of the respondents refused offers of higher salary / better perks from hospitals is highly conservative areas. they were voluntarily taking pay-cuts to instead work on the coasts, or (in the case of texas) a city like austin that's a well-known outlier relative to the standard state political scene.

when asked why they were turning down all that money (sometimes as much as a $250k/yr difference) a lot of the new doctors responded something along the lines of "i don't want to raise my eventual children in a state that includes a school curriculum that denies evolution in favor of jesus dinosaurs and abstinence only education".

basically these highly educated people, that are specifically trained to help save the lives of others, cannot even be compelled by money to move to regressive cities / states. this has some pretty serious implications for the future lifespans of people in those areas, as their current doctors will eventually retire / die, and very few new grads are even willing to set foot in their cities. essentially, the only new doctors that were willing to move into regressive areas were doctors that were either natives of a given place, or else natives of a similar location. anybody with any sense is their heads is correctly deciding "no loving way do i want to spend my life around these god awful fucks"

anyway the good news is, if there is another civil war it's extremely likely the conservative team will very quickly suffer massive casualties from what should be otherwise minor injuries / illnesses, because there's not going to be anybody around to actually provide medical care for them.
