I think maybe that's been covered, but for his character specifically when was it most noticeable? that stupid citizen kane episode. it was still early enough in the series to be a funny episode overall and who shot mr burns was still a season away, but I think that's where his character started to noticably change.

what was the one where homer was playing five finger fillet wrong and at some other point in the episode he licks an ice sculpture and a big chunk of his tongue comes off? I remember thinking that the simpsons had gotten pretty terrible when that one aired and that was also around the point I stopped even watching reruns.

But when I think about it, maybe it really is just coasting on momentum, like they're worried if they stop at all they'll never get back up to where they are now well, where they are now is the lowest point so they don't have much to lose.
