I wonder if there was even one single person on the entire Simpsons crew that genuinely thought anything in this scene was funny

At what point did Mr. Burns go from the insane villainous bad guy to the goofy, detached old grinch? I think maybe that's been covered, but for his character specifically when was it most noticeable?

that stupid citizen kane episode. it was still early enough in the series to be a funny episode overall and who shot mr burns was still a season away, but I think that's where his character started to noticably change.

what was the one where homer was playing five finger fillet wrong and at some other point in the episode he licks an ice sculpture and a big chunk of his tongue comes off? I remember thinking that the simpsons had gotten pretty terrible when that one aired and that was also around the point I stopped even watching reruns.

edit: Yeah, I'm surprised they haven't just temporarily stopped the show and got going after a year or so to get that cheap reboot spike. But when I think about it, maybe it really is just coasting on momentum, like they're worried if they stop at all they'll never get back up to where they are now

well, where they are now is the lowest point so they don't have much to lose.

There’s an episode where he opens either his 500th or 1000th Krusty Burger, but in any case Krusty just doesn’t make any sense.

No where in human history has a daytime cable access clown show ever topped ratings, and if Krusty were a national show he’d have to produce it from NYC or LA. He lives in a mansion with a private plane and Itchy & Scratchy, which seemingly Krusty exists as the soul gatekeeper or despite it being owned and operated by a giant corporation with their own private Island amusement park.

Like a subsidiary cartoon on this cable access clown shoe has private island Disney money but the live studio audience is barely 50 people?

I know I’m sounding like Comic Book Guy but I never applied brain power to The Simpson’s before and I’m just now realizing that nothing about Krusty or Itchy & Scratchy make any sense (unless Krusty is a stand in for Tracy Ulman, then it starts to work)

I like stories.

Ha, that's a real good comparison. Personally watching clips from the new episodes gives me the ol' "hidden picture" vibes, in that my eyes just sort of give up trying to decipher what's on screen after a while and become unfocused.

I think the writers and artists heard about "hidden details in TV shows" being a currently popular thing and took it really literally.
