That is what happened after the 1930's and it lead to the amazing wealth that the West had for several decades after WW2. The policies changed after the 1960's and we have all been on decline since then. That would be the safe change to make if you won't want to worry about full socialism. You not only improve the lives of everyone, but boost the consumer economy due to the middle class spending. Of course we know that won't happen because the conservatives want all or nothing, and they hate a civil and caring society. Capitalism won't last, no economic system in the history of humanity has lasted as any significant force until today. But whatever the next one is, it has to have a large middle class and be democratic in nature. Anything else will lead to war and violent revolution.

It seems like the GOP are signing away their Senate and House majorities if they pass this thing. The damage it will do to the vast majority of Americans, including their base, will enrage the people to the point that nothing else they do will save their seats come election time. Who is going to vote for someone when their healthcare is gone and they are sick or dying, or know someone who is because of the way their representative voted? This just seems so stupid on their part.
