Might have to start carrying actual paper books again soon, if this spreads from the UK to the rest of Europe.

I'm frankly surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Bombs are incredibly hard to locate in those types of devices even if you're looking for them, and the resources the airports put into that stuff isn't nearly enough.

Don't need to hijack it, just blow a hole in the side over a major city. It's also extremely easy to fit bombs into newer laptops and tablets if you know what you're doing. Hi GCHQ, I work in security and am not a terrorist.

Your into this kind of thing, Twisto, what are the chances of any part of this security ratchet ever being undone? Or do we just lose item after item until one day hand luggage is banned?

Nobody ever wants to be the guy who okay'd the unbanning of something because if it's used for something bad within 50 years they'll blame him. The only way we're getting this stuff back is if security technology outpaces the bomb makers (lol) or those countries are deemed safe again (lol). I wonder if worldwide socialism might help with one of these!

Wouldn't it have to be a pretty major hole? As I recall the last laptop bomber just killed himself and the hole posed no issues with landing the plane.

Depends on altitude, speed and location. It varies, which is why it's not that big a risk if it's not in the cabin, it'll be surrounded by bags that will absorb the blast.

Yeah that's always been the utterly obvious flaw in these checkpoints; they just move the people queuing further out of the protective layers of security and make them easier to attack.

Modern airport security is to protect the planes and things below the flightpath more than they are protecting passengers.

This hits the nail on the head. They don't give a poo poo about passengers, they just don't want another plane trying to ram the commons or the pentagon.

Also, with a laptop bomb you needn't go on the plane yourself, I guess. You could conceive of making something that looks like a removable battery, with a timer inside of it, and replacing the laptop's actual battery with it.

(No GCHQ I am not a terrorist I promise)

Timers are old school, there might be a barometer or something in there. If it's just a battery it's much easier to catch than a full on laptop though.

There is some kind of sick twisted belief that many fools cling on to that all patriotism or nationalism or pride in your country is bad, that a country shouldn't look out for itself first and foremost. It's broken-brained insanity, absolutely disconnected from how real people think and feel.

You think that genocide is fine if it works, so I'm happy to disagree with you on this. Nationalism is a disease and the sooner we're rid of it, the better. Also, go gently caress yourself.

Mental issues in soldiers is a very real and very serious issue. I'm not saying this guy has it, and I'm not sure if he saw professional if he was using that defence in court, but suggesting that mental issues, including battle stress, are made up to help soldiers get away with war crimes is a very slimy thing to do.

As his superior Tom (?) said it's a sad situation but Al broke the law. I'd say manslaughter is probably a fair outcome and who knows? Maybe this high profile case will lead to greater understanding of poor mental health in men.

Unless they can prove some sort of mental issues it's still murder, I'm just saying that sweeping statements like jBreton made are unhelpful at best, and really scummy at worst.
