The contemporary press actually is garbage though so despite all those sick burns on the tankies you still sound like a retard for defending the status quo
this is true. the fact of the matter is that the newspaper industry is inherently broken to the point where it doesn't even work in theory. if you accept the premise that a healthy democracy needs a free, varied and versatile press, leaving it in the hand of the free market seems like A Bad Idea.

i also found a daily mail article about that documentary which included the line:

quote:

So Cooke leaked to the student newspaper lurid details of student Tories singing Nazi songs, and then caused the national press to get involved.

But there's a problem with this story. The singing of Nazi songs by two or three people - obviously not real Tories - actually occurred in Michaelmas 2010.

It's also worth noting that old social democratic parties in Europe are all incredibly rigid and hierarchical. Labour had gotten used to the way things went in the previous decades, everyone knew the rules and what to expect. There were turns and orders and steps to take. Most of Corbyn's career has been spent on the sidelines of the Labour party, a corner that was just roundly ignored. See the Blair quote about him during the nineties. What Corbyn essentially did by appealing to the membership was cut in line and mess up a lot of plans. Not only did he prevent the Next In Line from getting a shot at the big leagues, he also rendered the whole old process of getting ahead within the party useless - all those influential party members, kingmakers, etc felt the power slip from their fingers.

And not only did he get in without playing by the rules, he most likely changed the way the entire game was played. Now they too have to appeal to the public, now they have to shift to the left, now they have to come out of the back offices and face the sunshine. Can't imagine the past pillars of the party being too happy about that.

That does a lot to explain exactly why people are flipping the gently caress out at Corbyn, but are all too cowardly to explicitly say why. Thanks.
It was the giant, unspoken truth behind Owen Smith's "All of Corbyn's policies but without Corbyn" platform during the leadership elections. That's not to say that Smith actually believed in what he was selling - the point is that he and many others in the party will peddle whatever sells. They're the purest of technocrats, worried mainly about their careers, saying whatever they feel they need to say to get ahead. And now Corbyn's taken that from them.

the point isn't that she should've received a harsher sentence - she was treated fairly. it's not that the judge looked at her and thought 'she's white and smart, let's give her a pass.' but if she hadn't been white or smart/"promising" or whatever, that judge was far less likely to have been so fair and understanding.
