And honestly, as an employer, I feel completely unqualified to make those choices as well. I should have no place in deciding alone what your family's needs may be. That poo poo is personal. Luckily, our company is small enough that we just discuss our needs as openly as possible. And we pay 100% of the cost, because if it's my responsibility to provide it, I should provide all of it.

In a perfect world, you'd have no use for cops; the best they can ever be is justified, necessary evil with minimized negative effects. The point of loading the attitude as by default negative is you should be always wary of them, and you should by default be prepared to face and deal with adversity from them. Of course, this negativity shouldn't be aimed at the persons of the ones who legitimately try their human, moral best. My best pal's brother is a cop, and he's real cool. It also shouldn't keep you from cooperating them in situations where it's the best option. But it should ideally keep you on your toes around them, it should keep you from needlessly snitching on people who you have no quarrel with. It should naturally make you very wary and opposed to further growth of their privilege and powers, etc.

That's my homegrown hot take of the day.

This is my take as well. As the son of a career cop, I understand their place in society. But as the son of a corrupt cop, I know they can not be trusted. They my not always be the enemy, but they are by no means allies.

I wish it was the cool kind. It was mostly him using his position as Chief of Police to get access to drugs and sexual assault victims. And of course it's a small town, so everyone knows but waits until my parents split to unburden themselves of his secrets. And from what I've learned since then, most cops are just like him. gently caress him. gently caress cops.

there’s another Chris Rock bit that I remember seeing, maybe his replacement for or update to the more famous but he regrets, where he says there’s only one time a white person can say it in front of him, and that’s when they’re singing along to a rap song, because he knows they’d say it if he wasn’t there so they might as well go ahead.

I hate to admit it, but I am guilty of this. I have no desire to use the word towards someone, ever. I have no need of it in my vocabulary. But if I'm alone in my car with the stereo up, singing along to a song that uses it, I rarely self-censor. I know this will always make me just a little bit of a bad person, but I can live with that.

I think this is just true of people; like humans in general. I am increasingly disappointed to see how so many well-meaning people will jump on every grenade and are willing to die on every hill for their principles. It's commendable, to be sure, but extremely isolating and further waters down their argument. Pick your battles, you know, there are no messiahs to follow.

My dad was a career cop and police chief of a small town, and was the biggest bully I have ever know. Then after my parents split and he went and started another family, we started getting these stories here and there from people about how badly he abused his power around town and everyone just kept quiet about it. I'll never understand why someone, anyone didn't speak up and save everyone a decade or more of pain.

I can't be certain there was any violence or threats like that. More that it was a small southern town in the 80s with a very deep "good ol boy" culture and you just didn't talk (until after they are gone and then you tell everything because the gossip is too juicy to keep inside anymore). gently caress that place and everyone in it. Except for my mom and my siblings and their families, I guess; they never escaped.

This is where I'm landing too. I've put in a dozen hours or so and have no emotional connection to the world or the characters. It's too open and too generic. Of course, I'm not the same kind of gamer I was when I would put 500+ hours each into Skyrim and Fallout, but I also felt like they had a story to tell. Starfield feels like a mash-up of No Man's Sky and Destiny; so vast and so immersive but with no direction and nothing to make me care. I may come back to it later, but right now, I'm mostly just disappointed.
