No they're not required so not common in new builds. And this is a very old tower anyway.

Question though. If the fire has as it seems spread up the exterior of the building, would sprinklers help much?

you've also got Lancaster Rd coming in the opposite direction of Grefnell Rd. and the pedestrianised route to Latimer Rd station is wide enough if you can past the bollards.

All the numbers floating around are really vague. The only quote the BBC has for the number of people living in the building is "400-600" (no loving way the council doesn't have a much more accurate number than that" and Kensington and Chelsea LBC says it's relocated "109 households" in hotels (which could be anywhere between 200 and 400 people). It's pretty clear that they don't want people doing their own maths of "x residents - y survivors = z victims".
What is it that you think councils do? Cos really they don't keep constant track of every house or flat in their borough. Now if an extensive national ID database had ever happened it'd be a different matter

They're generally pretty keen on keeping track of how many people in each property should be paying council tax.

So as long as we assume no one had kids living with them, is renting with bills included, and every flat share has put all their names down that'll be a useful & accurate number

Basically just keep waiting for the emergency services to give confirmed numbers once they're in and can count bodies.

Sadiq Khan has thrown his hat into the ring for 'biggest missed point' and 'biggest oval office' with his piece in the Observer.

He literally blames the building standards of the 70s for the Grenfell fire and suggests all tower blocks from that period might have to be torn down. Aside from the fact that the building was loving FINE until we decided to cover it in petrol a few years ago, tearing down all old tower blocks would have the nice side effect of removing most of the remaining places for poor people to live in London.

Is Khan actually planning on using this fire as an excuse to rapidly speed up the gentrification of London, by tearing down homes instead of cheaply retrofitting them with sprinklers? Because that's the impression.

"loving fine" probably not. The residents group seems to have been raising fire safety issues for years that were never addressed. i think the inquiry is going to have a lot to say
