loving around with this Game Pass PC thing since Discord thrust a code at me. I'm assuming nobody plays Gears 1 Ultimate online anymore and I should just jump straight to Gears 5, right? I want to shoot a weird alien man and only have so much HDD space at the moment.

Some additional info from Gamespot

  • System is about as wide as a Xbone controller and three times as tall. The Xbox logo doubles as the power button.
  • Designed to be very quiet - fans are supposedly around the same volume as the One X.
  • New controller is mostly a tweaked version of the Xbone's - the D-Pad is a new "hybrid" design, there's a PS4-style share button in the center, and it's "ever-so-slightly" smaller to slightly increase hand-coverage. Series X controllers will also work on Xbone and Windows, and Xbone controllers will work on Series X.
  • There's a "Dynamic Latency Input" system that "allows inputs to directly sync up with a game's rendering path" in a bid to reduce input lag.
  • Instant-resume where you left off for more than one game at a time.

Xbox has historically done incredibly poorly in Japan, no matter how much money Microsoft throws at indie developers to make increasingly esoteric arcade shmups for it.

PC also isn't hugely popular IIRC, being traditionally the realm of indie devs selling burned CD-Rs of their work at comic conventions and/or outright porn games, but things like the ability to reach an international audience via Steam and the whole thing about not having to pay for devkits has improved matters.

I played the first 3 levels this morning and it is really cool. They've even animated the enemy corpses to replicate the way that Doom sprites only had one PoV and would spin around with your viewpoint.
They're not actually "real" hand-drawn sprites! It's a fancy effect that takes a 3D model and renders it to a flat sprite on the fly. You can turn the effect off and just see the monsters as 3D models if you're curious.

Just need them to get Spelunky 2 to be ported over as well, and ideally the original game as well and Downwell would be pretty nice. They're some solid indie gems that really should be on Xbox by now.
The studio that handled the programming and such on Spelunky 2 is currently busy with porting the series to Switch, but I suspect that a homecoming to Xbox is on their list for down the line since they've developed (and are developing) Xbox ports of other people's games.

That's good to know! Do they not make the games in GM any more? They had a pretty good system for compiling builds for different platforms but they may have gone with something different, I haven't kept up. Reading how Derek Yu approached somewhat random level generation was interesting and utterly genius, though. Never would have thought of trying that approach in a million years but mixing handcrafted segments with layout randomization like that works so well. I wonder if that inspired Bungie's 'Infinite Forest' in Destiny 2 before they removed that and a bunch of other content from the game?
Spelunky HD on XBLA used a custom game engine by Derek's programmer buddy on account of it being many, MANY moons before Game Maker gracefully handled consoles. Spelunky 2 also uses a custom engine, but his buddy was busy with other stuff so the programming was handled by Blitworks, a studio in Spain that usually mostly handles ports.
