I notice lots of older people believing in some hidden power in the republic as well, where if people just work long enough (with no indications for how long) and hard enough(with again, no further qualification) then the magical apparatus of the republic will spring to life and start churning out policies that are diametrically opposed to probably 90% of the legislative and policy outcomes of the country. It's like a boomer/silent thoughtform merging with the protestant work ethic and a constellation of national myths.
