If that feels weird, it is even weirder in Men in Black 2.

On the Rambo/Rocky talk:

There is a weird parallel between the two sets of films.

Where the first in the series is an actual movie. Where a sad broken man deals with trauma, and internalized toxic masculinity. Battling a world that tells him he doesn't belong.

But as the films progress, they turn into rah rah stories about a big strong tough manly superhero who overcomes the evil baddies, (be they the Russians or Mr T), by punching/shooting them. And he wins because he is so tough and muscly and manly YAY!

America ended the seventies as a country which had for the first time lost the war and being in economic turmoil and uncertain about its role in the world. It would have been a perfect moment for an introspective examination for its reason to being and how to build a better future.

America chose Ronald Reagan.

I wonder if the film was popular in Japan

Probably. James Bond was wildly popular all over the world. One of the reasons why Connery quit was that while they were shooting the YOLT in Japan, a paparazzi opened the toilet stall he was in and took pictures.

I would too *ahem* lost my poo poo if my privacy was taken from me because I play secret agent in movies.

Yeah it's funny that the reputation of Saturday Night Fever is "that light hearted romcom where Travolta dances", when it most certainly isn't.

But if something is light, it's the music. I love the strings on this song. It's like slowly sinking to a pool filled with marshmellows and candycone.

Obviously you shouldn't aspire to be Travis Bickle but the audience was definitely intended to be able to identify with him somewhat.

When I was in bad place a decade ago I watched Taxi Driver about once week. I didn't aspire to become Travis Bickle, but the film's masculine alienation and frustration spoke directly to me. It is easy to miss that Bickle is just a fool and killing a couple neighborhood gangsters doesn't actually solve anything. Nevertheless I doubt that there isn't single man in the western world who wouldn't regognize what Bickle is going through.

If you want to know what the 90s viewed as “political correctness gone mad” and what it would lead to, watch Demolition Man.

Every day I hope that movie never gets remade. Not just because it’s one of my favorite movies of all time, but because you KNOW it will inevitably be wall to wall “27 genders” “I AM TRIGGERED”, etc punching down “jokes” written by whatever rear end in a top hat conservative “comedian” is sort of in right now. Basically PC Principal: The Movie.

Well it can't be remade because it's also a parody of the eighties action movie. What could be a modern counterpart? Superhero movies?

It's just that he's a shithead who drives the coolest cars, eats the best food, drinks the best drinks and has the craziest of adventures.

If you think about True Lies at all while you're watching it, it's a crappy movie. Man neglects his wife, she gets unhappy, he entraps her. The villains are comically ineffectual to that point that it didn't seem like a fair fight. Our hero solves it all with overkill via a jet fighter in the end. Wife is happy now she knows her husband is a professional killer, because it's more interesting? Family stays together. It's the story of a man who is awesome badass, but other people don't know that, but belatedly come to agree.

When I watched True Lies couple of years ago it was a weird experience. Yes, it is a comedy, but it was sometimes hard to figure out what I'm supposed to laugh at.

Ok, car salesman is a sleazeball, funny. Arnie mindfucks and tortures him just for kicks? Played like a joke, so ha ha, I guess?

So, Batman wasn't...

How can I put this. Batman was silly in the 50s and 60s, but it wasn't in the same way. It's more that he did ridiculous things, but he was still presented as a serious character. You were meant to take him seriously.

Adam West Batman flipped the script and the comics started following suit- people even got upset at the time that they were making a mockery of the comics believe it or not.

So yeah. Batman the show was a satire in a way the comics weren't.

Adam West's Batman works because his Batman never winks at the audience nor does he act in self conscius way. This is Batman's world and these are his adventures. They might look silly for us, the watchers, but for the characters they are deadly serious.

I think my favorite example of movie 'translation' has to be the old 50's cult classic "Them!" about giant radioactive ants, which for some reason was translated as 'Spindlarna' when it released here in Sweden.

"Spindlarna" means "The Spiders", and to my knowledge there isn't a single spider in the movie.

Well Spiders at least sounds like an horror film. "Ants" sounds more like a peaceful nature film. Or possibly a drama about hard working people.

Movie titles are part of the marketing.
