Alter Ego posted:It isn't even a pragmatic argument to say Franken should stay--the governor of Minnesota is a Democrat and there are a few good options to replace Franken if he resigns. There's literally no reason not to do it at this point other than Franken's ego. The party has to cut him loose. Who are these good options? And what makes you believe the governor would make the right decision?

Democrazy posted:Biden missed his window. The only way we could win was on momentum from the Obama administration. The issue base is probably going to be substantially different in 2020. Biden had the charisma, but his stance with credit card companies said a lot about his economic positions. He wouldn't have been better than Hillary in that respect.

WampaLord posted:Also lmao at the idea of public services being eeeeeeeeeevil. I'm sure tons of people are out there burning their Social Security checks because of the propaganda. That reminds me of a fun story. A few years ago, my father went to the SSA office to start receiving his social security check. There was some guy in the front of the line who got very angry. He was so upset that the clerk was an immigrant with a thick accent, he spent several minutes ranting about the country going to poo poo because of people like them. That angry guy left the building without changing his status, letting everyone know that he threw away $2400 a month because the clerk wasn't white.

I suspect we're going to see a lot of pretend socialists entering office over the next decade, just because there's a ton of establishment in the way and even genuine socialists will feel the pressure to compromise. Does anyone remember which governor (or mayor?) it was that supported 15 minimum during their run, but then dropped their support after they were elected? poo poo like that is going to happen a lot I think.

When is she up for re-election? I've been thinking about how hilarious it would be to run against her myself, but I'm really hoping a more qualified socialist has lined up already.

Joe Mama Poonana posted:The Young Turks supports Justice Democrats running for office but is no longer affiliated with Justice Democrats. This is due to some conservative finding a copy of Cenk Ugur's old blog posts from the late 90s when he was a single conservative libertarian in his 20s on archive.org (as the originals no longer exist for obvious reasons) and on there he posted some lovely stuff about women. This got into the news and as a result the Justice Democrats kicked him out. What's interesting is this was very publicly known even before these blog posts were found out. He's openly talked about his days as a young conservative going to law school and how he was an rear end in a top hat back then on TYT. Anyways, apparently things you say 20 years ago when you were on the complete opposite of the political spectrum means you're no good for the Justice Democrats, regardless if you're one of the co-founders and have overwhelmingly shown that you're a progressive. The other co-founder Kyle Kulinski left Justice Democrats after they kicked Cenk out. It makes me wonder how people process things in their mind. Do people really believe that the first political opinions you have in your life is your true belief? It's like the concept of growth and change is foreign to people. Or maybe I'm overthinking it and it's just an excuse to grab power wherever you can get it.

Another school project I'd be ashamed of today.

Even if such a measure could be passed, it's really important you go full 100% elected at the start, because chances are you're going to need the centrist dem support and they need to appear like they did something to curb your extremism. Having them talk you down from 100% to 60% isn't the worst compromise, whereas starting at 40% is going to get you talked out of the whole drat thing in favor of some other toothless method.

theCalamity posted:So I hear a lot of liberals being against a $15 minimum wage because in rural areas and I guess poorer areas, making 15 is a lot of money compared to cities. But if people are being paid more money, doesn’t that more people have more money to spend on things which strengthens the economy? I’m dumb when it comes to that kind of stuff. Keep in mind that Washington State passed a 13.50 minimum wage law. Nobody has been badly affected. The rural impact is a myth.

If you're going to advocate for a jobs program, you're going to need to be a lot more specific about what jobs somebody can do that the private sector can't afford and that automation won't do better in the next 15 years.
