This sounds kind of close to this modded DS-1 I got as part of a craigslist deal. At the all-dimed settings you showed, it’s a whistling feedback machine unless the strings are totally muted, and at lower settings, it’s got that gated fuzz thing. Is his a known/common mod? I always wondered what was done to that thing.

JHS does a DS-1 mod that has a few different levels of hosed-up to it and all available to be switched in/out: https://www.jhspedals.com/products/discontinued-rare/boss-ds-1-synth-drive/

Apparently they have another model out now since we got ours that has yet another switch. I honestly don't know how much more gain they can add to the frickin thing after the original version of the mod. It already self-oscillates.

While we don't own any name-brand headliner guitars, we own a lot of the foreign-built budget edition guitars, and I'll take them any day over a Gibson or Fender that cost 10 times as much (or more). I haven't played a Les Paul that appreciably beats out my Epi. My Squier II strat has a better neck then almost any American Standard I've played. Our PRS SE is ridiculously close to a "real" one. The Squier Jag Bass is a really fuckin' good rock bass.

"Budget" guitars are great and I hope that people in general continue to catch on. (Not bluesdad/dentist collector-types, though. Drain them for all they have.)

I think my ever growing pedal collection is becoming stupid music poo poo at this point.

Like how many pedals do you people all own?

I have like ~40 something, and I maybe use 8 or 9 of them regularly. Most just sit around collecting dust. I don't have any crazy rare or expensive vintage ones though.

My wife is a ridiculous nutbar fan of The Edge, so our collection is as thus:

Digitech Whammy 4
Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone
Dunlop Crybaby Q95
Kay Fuzztone clone in Crybaby housing
Big Muzz Pi clone (germanium diodes)
Pigtronix EP-2 Envelope Phaser (really similar to the Lovetone Meatball)
DOD Gonkulator ring modulator
BOSS DS-1 (JHS Synth Mod)
Moog MF Boost
Moog MF Chorus
Moog MF Delay
Red Witch Titan
KORG SDD-3000

And then into her AC-30. I'm usually content with my Eleven Rack, but I also have an old tube Harmony that I recapped and added a polarized plug to so as to not kill myself. The pedalboard setup is ridiculously flexible in the amount of tones we can get out of it, but we barely use it for probably even half of its ability. I mean, like four or five of those pedals have expression pedal inputs and we don't use them because we only have one and it's usually in a drawer or something most of the time. Both clones were built by my wife.

My PERSONAL favorites are the Big Muff clone, the EP-2, and the Titan. If I were into making a noise band (lol), the JHS DS-1 would be my favorite, hands down. That thing makes fuckin' WEIRD noise.

Players like Zakk Wylde also combine sets and use lighter gauge strings on the three high ones (10,13,17 in his case) and thicker in the bottom range (36, 52, 60 for Wylde). This means downtuned muted chugging is available on the wound strings, but also unlocks crazy bendy lead stuff on the high strings.

Most string companies nowadays actually offer a set with similar specs. GHS has the Wylde signature strings, Ernie Ball has the "heavy bottom, skinny top" set running from 10 to 52. Not sure if anyone has a set that has the three lightest strings from a .09-set, but it's worth a try to make one by buying singles if you prefer that.

I’ve used heavy-lights for a while and I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that they’re too much work for the condition my tendons and ligaments are in. Going down to standard 9s from here on.

The biggest thing to remember about Devin’s music is that he’s a giant fuckin’ weirdo with a sense of humor that leads to things like multiple concept albums about an alien intent on destroying the universe in order to get the perfect cup of coffee. I have an early-60s Harmony 303a, which is basically an AM radio with a growth spurt, and that loving thing is so loud I've literally never turned it up past 4, especially with an EMG-81 feeding it. My wife's AC30 has never seen higher on the master than a 3. Dude in a thrash band I knew would run his Marshal EL34 100/100 power amp at about 6 (for some unknown reason.)

I just don't get the need for super ungodly loud amp settings in tyool 2019. If you're in danger of drowning out the snare at a bar gig, you're playing to loving loud.

That said, just one time having an actual massive wall of Oranges and cabs and playing some stoner-rear end stoner riffs DOES seem fun. Just once.
