at least in the west, boba/bubble tea is an extremely shallow and superficial cultural signifier for middle to upper middle class east asian diaspora, to appear different and foreign but also appealing enough to whites to not weird them out (like say, with balut or fung jao)

sometimes it's used by 1st gen/2nd gen AAs/CAs to compensate for a whitewashed western upbringing: "I drink boba tea almost everyday so I'm Asian af"

it's also where you get the term "boba liberal": asian americans/canadians with heavy investment in surface level idpol (representation in media, cultural appropriation, etc) while completely ignoring issues faced by poor asian immigrants (exploitation by employers, homelessness, discrimination)

iunno, is the average japanese quality of life on as steep of a decline as an american's? i just don't see japan as having a big death drive as america does

The number was revealed by Jiao Yahui, an official from the NHC. She said that the average age of those who died of COVID-19 in the period was 80.3 years old, with 90.1 percent of the fatalities above 65 years old, and 56.5 percent were aged above 80 years old; more than 90 percent suffered from underlying conditions.

China has insisted on classifying deaths of patients with a positive nucleic acid test as COVID-19-related deaths, which is in line with the WHO and international standards, Jiao noted.

The causes of COVID-19 deaths are twofold: coronavirus infection leading to respiratory failure and death, or underlying diseases interacting with the coronavirus leading to death, Jiao said. Among the reported 59,938 COVID-19 deaths, 5,503 were due to respiratory failure caused by the virus, and 54,435 were from underlying conditions interacting with epidemic infection, according to the NHC.

In Colorado, the discrepancy over people dying with COVID-19 versus of COVID-19 is due to federal reporting guidelines requiring the health department to report any COVID-positive death to the CDC, even if COVID-19 wasn’t thought to cause the death, Gov. Jared Polis said in a news conference Friday (May 15). The health department has been instructed not to report those deaths as being caused by COVID-19 to the public, Polis said.

In Florida, state law prevents the release of death certificate data, Wolfson said, but it may be possible to get public release of death certificates with identifying information removed, or of cumulative datasets.

https://www.mass.gov/news/department-of-public-health-updates-covid-19-death-definition

quote:

Massachusetts has applied this new definition retroactively to the start of the pandemic in March 2020. As a result, 4,081 deaths in Massachusetts that were previously counted as associated with COVID will be removed. In addition, approximately 400 deaths not previously counted but identified through a manual process of matching death certificates with medical records will be added to the COVID-19 death count. The state’s overall COVID death count, therefore, will decline by 3,700.
