In particular, the podcast is quite good and will give you a good idea of what political aims the DSC is aiming for.

I'd purchase DMs, but it's not a great time to spend money on this site, so if I get some response here, I'll post my alternate email as a contact or we can connect over discord.

WHO IS JOE ROBERTS?

The domain owner of democraticsocialists.ca is listed as Joe Roberts, resident of London, having created the website January 15th of 2020.

On his Twitter page, Roberts is a vocal fan of Bernie Sanders’ candidacy for US president. His pinned tweet is an endorsement for Kate Graham, a candidate for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party. His profile picture on LinkedIn is himself, wearing a poppy while speaking from a lectern, with the American and Israeli flags behind him.

Roberts moved to Washington, DC in 2017, where he began working as Global Chief Advancement Officer for The Israel Project, a pro-Israel non-profit. (The Israel Project was formed in 2002 during the second intifada, in order to manage Israel’s public image while Palestinian rights were being violated. It closed in 2019.) Presumably while working for TIP, Roberts replied to a tweet by the State of Palestine twitter account. On June 22, 2017, @Palestine_UN tweeted: #Palestine elected vice-chair of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination election! #CERD” Roberts, in his reply, said “#Antisemitism not high on their list of priorities.”

Yeah, this is a good catch, and something I read linked from this equally scathing article:

https://briarpatchmagazine.com/articles/view/show-me-the-socialists

So Joe being pro-Israel is definitely an issue, for the organization and for me personally. If the above quoted section was all I had to go on, I'd dismiss the org out of hand and look elsewhere.

The article I linked describes the DSC as a branding exercise more than a movement-building exercise, but then goes on to discuss the myriad ways socialists have failed to influence public opinion, policy, and party politics over the last fifty years, while smaller, local socialist orgs get mired in issues only relevant on a local level. Maybe a branding exercise that looks to the success of the DSA is precisely what's needed to jump start an openly socialist movement here? Also, it's worth noting that the DSC is working to develop a chapter presence and has a national convention planned for August of next year. I think there's reasons to think they really are trying to become a democratically-led organization and not just a social media presence.

While he is the national organizer, Joe is only one person in a growing org. I'm not going to ask any of you to listen to hours of the podcast, and delve into the org's facebook and twitter presence, but I have over the last few months because I was equally skeptical. What I've heard was enough to convince me that Joe's heart is in the right place on many issues other than Israel, and the org on the whole is worth tentative support.

But I chose to bring this here precisely because I wanted this kind of push back from CSPAM in particular, because while this place is cynical as hell, on the whole its instincts tend to be right. So what do you think?

i mean theres a diff between being pro israel and actively working for an israel sponsored propaganda project in dc. i'd be hesitant about about any project controlled by someone like that, likely has ties to intelligence agencies too

There's approximately zero chance I'd vote Liberal anyway, but it's hard to find any other information, really. Everyone outside of this site seems to be lining up to praise her as the greatest politician of our generation, and the forums are obsessed with the nazi grandpa thing, which sure, I guess, but I'm finding it hard to get worked up about someone not denouncing their grandfather.

Canada towing the US line is definitely a much more recent phenomena. We had good relations with Cuba throughout the blockade. You have to hand it to Chretien for not invading Iraq... Also there was the entire peacekeeping era, which while fraught with problems, still probably represents a high-point in Canadian foreign relations.

Iraq was huge, and pissed the americans off big time. France did the same and now both Canada and France are led by/infested with regime change supporting liberals with close ties to the american military intelligence complex. Very odd.

It's so infuriating how nakedly fptp exists just to prop up entrenched power systems.

What's that? The liberals won 70% of the seats with 34% of the popular vote and the NDP won 6% of the seats with 30% of the popular vote? Sounds like effective representation to me!

So sensible how all of our democratic voting rules are legislated from a period when cars didn't exist and people still used leeches and quicksilver for their bad humours.

ontario had a referendum on alleviating fptp with MMP as part of the ballot during a provincial election and it failed by a considerable margin, most people polled didnt know wtf it was.

people "find a way" because its where all the jobs are. i have no desire to love this city, it sucks rear end. piss poor public transit connections (seeing my friend in scarborough takes 1h30m compared to half an hour if i had a car), decaying public amenities, insane cost of living and quite frankly its pretty boring and there's not much of a public commons here. i've lived in places in asia where all the hurdles and costs of city living were at least balanced out by good and well maintained transit and infrastructure
