All good things.

yeah seconding australian super. when i looked into it a couple of years ago they were good because of all of the above. i think you can manually manage your investments too if you cbf

From working alongside some childcare providers ( both for and not for profit)the really good quality ones have really thin margins due to greater overheads.

Eg. More admin staff, kitchen staff, better quality food, rent / lease, safety and quality assurance, good resources, good cleaning, etc

hambeet

Oh also in some areas the market is saturated and centres aren't running rooms at full capacity, yet still have similar overheads.

It's still easy to make money though if you're in a good location or have good economies of scale ( eg. Goodstart or G8 Education)

Coming back to this, what boggles my mind is that apartments near actual amenities are deemed unsuitable to raise a family, but living a million miles from town with no backyard is somehow a better way to go?

Well some of these houses are vastly bigger than the shitbox apartments in the city, but only some of them. Some of them in that photo are loving tiny.

Anyway this is a housing affordability issue as much as it is an infrastructure, density and planning issue. If housing was more affordable people wouldn't be buying poo poo boxes an hour plus from the city if they had other options.

Oh I agree, didn't Andrews put a planning thing in saying 35% garden per block or something.

Nah, my understanding is the problem is they start out pretty high, but very quickly plateau compared to other industries. I mean there are other contractual issues as well but just regarding pay levels they're still pretty poo poo.

yeah mates teaching in the public system are all at the top of their bracket and there is no where to go.

theyr also say that with all the increased workload, reporting, etc some teachers are completely throwing in the towel and going back to being casual relief teachers because the pay is just as good, if not better and zero reporting requirements. they think it's a good trade off for lack of job security.

JBP posted:

Are they specialist/leading teachers? The rates in Victoria for those jobs are pretty good and attract percentage increases each year that would outweigh CPI.

e: the rates for classroom teachers at the top are also good. Like whatever the upper teacher bracket is attracts $80-100k which isn't poo poo by any means.

yeah some are now lead teacher, others doing special projects that can attract a 'bonus' payment or something or other. career progression is tough too because they would need to jump around to a few schools before they could go for assistant principal role which could mean losing their lead teacher / coordinator pays depending on the when and where.

the general consensus from all the teachers i know though i they're really ratcheting up the work load so that it's not unusual to be working to 11pm-12 each night for most of term 2 & 4.

not being a teacher myself i don't know how much is hyperbole, but I've found in adult education that I'm getting a lot more ex-primary school teachers from public and private just walking away from it and coming to teach in this sector.

hambeet
Sep 13, 2002

the pay is not lovely, wasn't say it was, but the lack of career progression plus the ever increasing reporting requirements and change in societal attitudes towards teachers is affecting some.

and by change in societal attitudes the anecdotes i hear say there's an increasing shift on fault and blame being laid at teachers' feet when a child isn't doing well in the classroom.
