If you're planning to run Alpha Strike then you can look up the http://masterunitlist.info/ and print out unit cards for the variants you want. As a rule AS is much more forgiving toward force composition than Classic and janky/bad mechs are much more viable.

Yeah there's really nothing stopping you from taking a later version of the Locust and Commando. This is BattleTech, not WarHammer. You can use any variant of the unit without having to buy a dozen versions of the mini. I mean, you could use a bottlecap frankly, but if you at least want to keep things close to visually accurate, then just focus on silhouettes.

According to MUL there are 34 officially supported Locust variants and only two or maybe three different CGL locust minis. What I'm saying is that I want a locust version of the new Urbanmech box.

Does an LRM20 count as artillery?

E. Actually I think the one on the bottom right may be a UM-R68 with a MRM-30. The one on the bottom left is probably a new Ilclan era variant although there is the UM-AIV which has an Arrow IV tactical nuke launcher.

E. The top two are almost certainly the Capellan urbie with the AC20 and the Suburbanmech with the PPC. According to the store page one of them is a reposed original RM-R60 which would make the one with the bigger gun either UM-R60L with the AC20 or the Suburbanmech.

If you don't have many clan mechs then I would recommend picking up another clan star box. The Striker Star has light and mediums that will allow for more force composition flexibility if you want to pit them against your IS mechs.

The current kickstarter is just an expansion wave for the previous kickstarter. The game has technically never died since it started 40 years ago but it had a soft, mostly aesthetic reboot about 5 years ago with the current product line. The Alpha Strike sister game of Battletech is also exploding in popularity right now.

Cross posted from the GBS thread.

Some fresh drama in the BattleTech community just dropped.

An anthology of queer Battletech stories was recently released with the blessing of CGL. It turned out that the moderators on r/battletech were alt-right bigots and they had a meltdown due to the gay mechs. The community responded by ripping into the mods and posting pride coloured mechs, cat girls and cat mechs.

This caused the r/battletech mods to completely poo poo the bed and delete the sub. The community started a new LGBTQIA+ friendly sub https://www.reddit.com/r/OfficialBattleTech/ which has received official backing from CGL:

CGL posted:

Hi everyone, this is Rem Alternis - the Community and Marketing Director from Catalyst Game Labs.

I have been working with a small team with members both within and out of CGL to talk about our plan for Community Building. We have a mission we defined on day one:

To build safe and respectful communities for BattleTech, Shadowrun, Leviathans, and Board Gaming.

We have been moving slowly but steadily toward this goal, though there is a lot to put into place. Who moderates? What are the rules and community guidelines? What types of posts do we allow/not allow and why? How do we communicate clearly and transparently? Should we build from the ground up or partner with already existing communities that demonstrate the same values we have? There is a lot of time, writing, collaboration, and research that goes into this and my personal focus has been on the places we already exist, like facebook, twitter, and instagram, before we branch into new platforms.

The need for a safe space on reddit was brought to my attention today. While reddit was far down on my list to get to, I feel that our community had an urgent need for our presence, and our support.

Let me be clear: BattleTech is for EVERYONE.

Freelancer Russell Zimmerman is on my community team, and has experience moderating safe communities. I asked him to take point on creating a subreddit and wrangling a mod team. Reddit is designed to be a community space, and our plan is to encourage and enable community members to moderate rather than us. It is not my intention to have this account be an active participant here. But to call this subreddit "official," the community and moderation team will need to abide by the same community guidelines as our other spaces. Once those are finalized, we will communicate them with you.

I will be stepping back off of reddit with this post, as it's moving weekend for my family, and I'm out of spell slots.

Thank you,

Rem

If I was writing for CGL I'd have a prole uprising being armed and secretly co-opted by Blakist cells. That way you can have your ramshackle army decked out with converted industrial mechs plus WoB mech variants (minus the fancy WoB gear like C3i) can come back for the IlClan era. You could even throw in some Solaris VII mechs and Protomechs for good measure.

So as an outsider with a barely-functional understanding of the setting and the franchise as a whole, how come we haven't gotten live-action Battletech movies/shows yet?

Like, 'Pacific Rim' loving kicked rear end and made good money, you'd think a setting with 40 years of backstory, a diverse array of factions, and literally 600 mechs to choose from would lend itself to some kind of live action movie with big stompy robots blowing each other up. It's my understanding that there's a lot of novels and fiction and stuff for Battletech, I can only assume that means actual self-contained narratives with characters can be told in the setting which is pretty much the only prerequisite for a movie other than throwing a big CGI budget at it so you can have big robots doing big robot things.

Is it like Warhammer40k where the rights holder was only willing to play ball on live-action stuff very recently?

The rights are a mess. Topps (who are owned by some other megacorp) owns the IP for Books and tabletop stuff, Microsoft owns the rights for all video game and some other random corporation owns the film/animation rights. Every time someone thinks about making a BT show or movie they take one look at the IP situation and run the gently caress away.

Scroggins does a lot of it, but if you look hard enough a couple artists have styles that somehow manage to be distinct still within the larger new design aesthetic. Scroggins' patreon is probably a pretty good indicator of the ones he's worked on personally, for anyone curious.

Brent Evans is still the art director as of like three days ago when he was doing "What's up with Catalyst" stuff at Gencon. Whether there's a separate "art team" that Scroggins heads within that organization I haven't the faintest clue.

Scroggins is mostly in charge of the redesigns of older mechs while another team handles the new Ilclan era mechs.

So we might be getting some of the newer Liao designs in plastic in the next couple years.
