I did pretty much all the writing on every single group project while in the US, and while some folks were appreciative of the slam-dunk As I was gifting them or were surprised a non-anglophone unwashed socialist would have better command of their mother's tongue () than them, I was more often engaged in arguments defending terms like "whilst", "conversely", or words that the professors specifically dropped during the semester in connection with concepts and topics you could easily tell (unless you're a buffoon) they wanted students to demonstrate their understanding about, like juxtaposition this or superimposition that. My capstone project had one of those supremely dumb and white chicks that was offended by the notion that a foreign student would offer to proof-read their contributions, and insinuated that I was "being a smartass" by diplomatically telling them "totally" shouldn't be used as an adjective, "obviously" had no place in research papers, and "Segway" is a two-wheeled scooter, and neither a verb, nor the loving noun they were looking for.

Rush Limbaugh has one of the biggest audiences IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD I'd say "How does he still not understand how the lottery works", but there are countless other things to point out in this rant, good lord. They're asking him to list policy experts supporting his course, and he's literally running down a laundry-list of FOX contributors and random idiots. How are reporters even following up with eloquent questions instead of going "Uh, Mr. President, what in the gently caress is that stupid poo poo you just said?"

mlmp08 posted:Discussion: having no facts and assuming someone is lying about an attack is lovely. Wait until such an allegation of false reporting is substantiated. I went back to see if I remembered how the initial incident was talked about in this thread, and I don't see any of this general systemic mistrust of victims of racial violence that you seem to be insinuating over the last few days happening. The very first responses were people sarcastically pointing out that a broken law enforcement system with a deeply-rooted history of systemic racism would probably end up not finding a racial motivation behind the crime. Even Chievache, the one you seem to be beefing with over this, condemned the perpetrators as "racists and homophobes" in the post where he pointed out that an attack that the victim itself reported as a random targeting of person of color seemed odd based on the fact that the perpetrators happened to casually have a noose ready to go. The only other posts I can find that are even remotely close to the way you're portraying the reaction of the thread are ones indicating there had to be more to the story, possibly even this having been a premeditated attack by racists (that must have been stalking him or seeking him out in some way), but made to look "random" for odd reasons. Then there are a couple of comments about not needing to immediately play devil's advocate, and the whole discussion basically ended after under two pages. I'm with you on the point where, a couple of days ago, unsubstantiated reports surfacing shouldn't be trusted until factual reports emerge, but I just don't see this picture you're painting of something really systemic being broken in the thread like it's full of MAGA idiots that immediately blame a victim of racial violence as a liar and would still double-down on that position even once an investigation supported their argument. I mean, as somone else pointed out, it's a thread to discuss current events. Let's discuss current events. If a story seems odd, I don't see why it shouldn't be discussed. And the story wasn't declared as "odd" by some posters because they were somehow having trouble acknowledging that there's a rampant problem with racism in the US, I don't think anyone in this thread has trouble admitting that.

I mean, the guy even got Trump to condemn the attack instead of throwing a hissy fit because the alleged attackers were Trump supporters. That might be the most incredible (and I do mean incredible literally) aspect of the story. Yet another aspect making this story exquisitely is that they apparently staged the attack in a way that the spot of the incident was near a street camera that they knew wouldn't cover the attack, but would still allow Smollett to feed a lead for the police to follow that he knew would be a dead-end. But when the cops turn up surveillance footage of a different camera later that shows his accomplices, he confirms it's them instead of just going "oh poo poo, they were picked up on camera after all, better deny they're the attackers", which leads the cops to their home where they find the noose, bleach, masks and even the loving magazines from which the anonymous death threat letter one or two weeks earlier was cut out of. And both suspects are Empire extras, with one of them apparently being Smollett's personal trainer. This entire story is just chock-full of poo poo that is so loving specific that you even have trouble believing the conclusion of the investigation, because who could loving script poo poo like that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXLx5OY21Bk I've got a feeling he won't be all that popular in the black or LGBTQ community for a bit, though what surprises me more is that right wingers don't look like they've dived all over this by what I've googled so far. The only MAGA idiot already all over this appears to be Steven Crowder.

Okay let's plan based on some worst case scenarios" "Okay, turns out no one really had a worst case scenario laid out for contingency planning. "Alright folks, the politicians hosed up everything and didn't provide us with any more answers. But it looks like there's some kind of mechanism in place to avoid the worst case hard cut. In any case, I think we need to increase recruiting a lot more." "Hey, so it looks like the logistics at every point of entry, especially the ports, might not be able to handle even the best-case scenario under this vague mechanism we were told about, we need to hire more people." "They did what? But...but why? *sobbing noises* Okay, just crank up the recruiting numbers even more. What do you mean 'recruiting efforts over the last year aren't yielding the numbers we were hoping for'? JUST HIRE MORE PEOPLE DAMNIT!"
