It's been a long time since I read any Pratchett but I definitely loved them when I was a teen. I think I read up to about Carpe Jugulum, and then there were only about 2 new ones out and I don't think my library/bookshop had them yet or something?

Something I've not seen people mention is that the more "standalone" stories like Moving Pictures and Pyramids were also very enjoyable IMO.

I grew up in Buckingham - lived there for 27 years then moved ~10 miles away for another 6.

It's been a very safe Tory seat in the past. It's also a small town (10k) that used to be a quiet market town with cheap houses and has slowly turned into a London commuter town with everything being mega expensive.

Hi thread, I'm back home in Canada after visiting the UK for the last 2 weeks.

Can confirm the following:

London is grim as gently caress.
British roads are narrow and terrifying when you've gotten used to big wide North American roads. Roundabouts are still miles better than traffic-light intersections in most cases though.
Cheesy chips with curry sauce are good and I miss them (but other sauces/gravy etc. are also good - don't want to start another UKMT civil war here).

We actually went to Westminster while we were back, just to have a look at the craic. Was quite interesting, seeing how College Green has been set up to avoid having to show/interact with Brexit protesters (pro and anti). Saw (Whoa-oa) Thangam Debonnaire being interviewed there, then bumped into Bercow on the tube (didn't say anything though - could have justified it though cause I was his constituent for about 10 years). Also we went there the day after the Scum ran their "Jeremy Corbyn is a chicken" thing and there was some Brexit Party twat in Westminster in a chicken-suit singing "Bawk bawk bawk Jeremy Corbyn" to the tune of "Seven Nation Army", plus an actual Sun-branded chicken-suit guy posing for photos with people by College Green. Pathetic, frankly.

Ironically while I was back in the UK I haven't been able to keep up with politics or the thread as much.

Oh and of course, I brought back some Monster Munch (Pickled Onion, sadly - would rather have had Flamin' Hot but Pickled Onion was what I saw in the shop) and a pack of Cheese & Onion Squares which I'll have when the mood strikes me.

Rory Stewart looks fine too but the way he carries himself when he talks to cameras is of someone who believes they're destined for the job they're in and that nothing will ever change that, a kind of blase indifference. They're also trading off their image heavily, obvious example being Rees-Mogg and Bojo but it's an integral part of the established view of electioneering (as much as it shouldn't be) and so a lot of MPs, especially on the right are politically choosing their style of appearance/body language to appeal to different groups, as evidenced by the tory power stance.

OK Yeah so I agree with the general point of "don't make fun of people for their appearances/things they can't change about themselves" (and I actually admonished somebody on twitter yesterday for making fun of Rachel Riley being boss-eyed despite the fact I can't stand the awful turd) BUT I took the podcast "horse in a oval office suit" as being about Rory Stewart's general demeanor i.e. how he acts/speaks to people, rather than his actual physical appearance (similar to how brian has described it in the bolded part above), which is a bit different.

See I feel good about anarchism, I need to do more reading on theory but like instinctively it seems that resisting power structures is the way to go... but doesn't that also leave you massively open to ratfucking by a larger neoliberal country/organisation?

Like I guess that's part of why the "socialism in one country" thing is somewhat doomed but then it also makes it that much more unrealistic in that you have to get a worldwide rise of the workers all at once.

Also the whole "no power structures" thing means that you have to fundamentally have a populace that's willing to just outright loving kill anybody who tries to set one up because there's no other way of stopping that poo poo, and while I'm fine with that in theory (cause you know, just don't try to take advantage of people and you're good), if somebody actually called upon me to do the killing I don't think I could actually do it.

Of course somebody might tell me now why I'm wrong and please do 'cause I'd like to learn more about this stuff.

AFAIK that's not so much a 'those people' thing as a 'original definition of the word' thing, but there's been a lot of Discourse around it recently, much of which seems to have been spawned by terfs trying to make it trans-sexist which is some bullshit.

I am also bisexual, and I am also of the firm understanding that that means 'attracted to people of all genders'.

I'm also only visible in that respect as of today so

Yeah so I'm bi and I came out to some of my wife's friends at dinner the other day and they're basically the first people I've ever told that other than my wife and a girl I was seeing before her. Feels good. I've told you lot but you're internet people and therefore not real.

Also yeah as far as I'm concerned it means "attracted to people of all genders". I'm more attracted to women though, and heavily hetero-romantic as I can only picture myself being in a relationship with a woman. Couldn't really tell you why, just some people who aren't bi might not realise that's a thing.

As for the schools thing, I went to a grammar, it was good for me because it was the first time I felt like I was being at all challenged by school. I'm a massive underachiever though so only did "ok" at my GCSEs compared to most of my peers and then hosed it off to go start working at 16 'cause nobody in my family had been to uni and most didn't do A-levels and it was never really impressed upon me as important. I went back a few years later and did a foundation year and a year of a degree before dropping out, continuing my under-achiever streak. Also weirdly for a grammar it mostly wasn't full of poshos. There were a few for sure but they were sort of their own clique for the most part (though actually many of those who had wealthier parents were surprisingly human and decent people), and most of everybody else was sound. I guess all the real poshos got sent off to private school - I grew up in Buckingham which is near Stowe (£36k/year). To be fair I hung around with a few kids from Stowe for a bit and they were sound enough too (but some of their mates were right twats) - I think this was probably a self-selecting thing because the guys I knew I met from being "bike lads" tearing around the place on our bikes at some of the local spots, and I think it's a somewhat universal thing that "bike lads" are sound.

Anyway my view is abolish private schools and at least the existing structure of grammar schools too. It's tricky for me with the grammar thing because my wife grew up in an area where grammar schools weren't a thing and said she'd have loved to have had the chance to go to one because she went to a really lovely comprehensive and got badly bullied for being a "nerd" and stuff, because she actually wanted to learn. She got into Cambridge by working her arse off anyway (her parents are a postie and a teaching assistant so no familial wealth there) - again the friends she made there are sound but there's definitely more of a slant to the middle class - one is the child of two doctors, for example - again he's a really lovely guy and somehow not a Tory but still.

Part of this is solved by just making all schools better but it could still be a beneficial thing to split kids who actually want to learn off from those who can't be bothered IMO (but not separating by wealth) - this is not a strongly held belief and I am willing to be convinced that this is a bad idea.

E: Yeah I guess I'm "Pansexual", which means I'm attracted to half-man half-goat gods of the wild.

Yeah referenda are fine if it's something like the recent abortion thing in Ireland: "Here is how things currently are with this clearly defined single issue, should we replace the current legislation [x] with this other already completely written and finalised, clear and simple legislation [y], Yes/No?".

Or even "Here's how things are at the moment with this trade deal, should we negotiate a change to this trade deal and then have a second vote after negotiations to confirm if we want to go ahead and make the change, Yes/No?".

But "Hey guys do you want to do this very very vaguely defined thing which has the potentially to royally gently caress everything and kill a load of people Yes/No?" is bad.
