James Cameron’s long-delayed “Avatar: The Way of Water” launched at the international box office, collecting $15.8 million from 15 overseas markets on opening day.

Disney, which is backing the ambitious sequel, says ticket sales were 124% ahead of “Avatar,” roughly 70% ahead of “Top Gun: Maverick” and 13% ahead of “Jurassic World: Dominion.” Opening day sales were 12% behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and 23% behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in comparable markets.

There’s outsized importance on the international box office, where the first “Avatar” made over $2 billion — nearly 70% of its total earnings.

In North America, the “Avatar” sequel is projected to generate $150 million to $175 million in its debut. Beyond a strong opening weekend, “The Way of Water” will need to stick around in theaters well into the new year to justify its existence. That was the winning formula for the first “Avatar,” which debuted in 2009 with a solid but unspectacular $77 million domestically. But the film had unparalleled staying power, and ticket sales eventually climbed to $760 million in North America and $2.92 billion globally, including subsequent re-releases.

The sequel to “Avatar” cost a reported $350 million, making it one of the priciest blockbusters in history.

gently caress you red river owns

not referring to the movie tho that kneejerk reaction was thinking of the red river comic book about this fifteen year old japanese girl who gets isekaied back to hittite times legit one of the best time slip stories ive ever read it helps a lot that it predates the current isekai trend so the premise is less what if my self insert traveled back in time and got magic powers for no reason and more what if a pretty but otherwise unremarkable fifteen year old girl traveled back in time and has to negotiate archaic social situations she doesnt really understand in the context of her being summoned in the first place to be used as a sacrificial artifact in episode four of an epic political series already in progress

theres a great bit where she has to do a fight to the death with a huge burly man and wins because she picks an iron sword since its the only weapon offered that looks like a real weapon to her while the other guy picks a bronze weapon thats just a total piece of poo poo in comparison events shake out like this because iron is new and its literally what the current armed conflict is about but random foot soldiers who have never seen an iron weapon before dont know or understand any of this what im getting at is that red river is a comic that was clearly written by a huge mesopotamia history nerd who disguised it as a shojo romance for marketability reasons and it should be the first thing that pops in to your head whenever someone says red river

if the war is being fought over iron then why wouldnt the guy know about iron swords

Mr. Nobody is the movie equivalent of "live, laugh, love" as home decor. not evil but so vapid and empty of honest human expression that it makes me uncomfortable to watch. It's like it was made by AI to be provacative, make you think "what if everything is in the dream of a newborn baby, what if every possible choice you make does happen, what if the butterfly effect is real, what if you were the last mortal person alive, what if in death you start your life over from birth, what if..."

I hate the laughing reverse Jared Leto in old man makeup doing a translatlantic accent at the end (because that's what old people in the 2000s sounded like, not what all old people sound like! he doesn't have the accent when he's Jared Leto without makeup!) edit: it's just a phoned in old man stereotype one would use for standup comedy... why is he talking like that??

this movie is the antithesis of all deep thought and good morals, it is superficial trash, it is a jared leto movie, and I despise it.
