There was a good graphic doing the rounds showing the difference between a million and a billion in piles of cash notes, but I can't remember where I saw it - if anyone else does it could be a good addition to the list of resources that someone is definitely compiling by now, right? (I'd volunteer but don't get much time at the PC atm)

Hey thread, do we have any evidence/material regarding Swinson / the lib dems being poo poo on the NHS? I'm marshalling my arguments to persuade my sister to vote Labour rather than Lib Dem and I think a heartfelt appeal pointing out how important the NHS are/have been to my family would be a big factor in swaying her. It's actually kind of devious of them not to have any policies besides remain because like Brexit itself it allows you to project whatever your own values are into the gaps.

mehall posted:I'm glad we could get something sorted for you. If you're asking me personally, As A Deaf Person, I'm comfortable using listen. Like most disabilities, deafness is a spectrum not an absolute; most deaf people have at least some degree of residual hearing, typically boosted by a hearing aid or cochlear implant, and I definitely prefer to hear what I can of the voices and follow along in the subtitles. This is why it can be super annoying for deaf listeners if the subtitlers try to editorialise/summarise and don't match the audio content exactly - we can tell something is off about what we're hearing vs reading, but have no way to tell what the difference is. I CAN watch TV shows on mute with subs, but it's a bit harder to follow and less enjoyable. Of course there will also be a segment of the audience who aren't in a position to consume the podcast with sound on and will choose YouTube + subs as their best alternative. I can't speak for those weirdos but it did feel right to use "consume" there. "enjoy" is a) making assumptions and b) sounds like you're talking about some kind of sexual transaction.

I think because of that there's an alarm goes off in my head whenever anyone words something like 'he's a Jew,' and I'm not sure why the wording sounds worse than 'he's Jewish.' It's because in calling someone a Jew you subtly imply that that encapsulates all that they are, whilst saying they are Jewish is just naming a singular trait. Like you don't call someone with Down's syndrome a Downie, you say they have Down's. E: I am not in any way equating being Jewish with having DS btw, just being involved in the DS community is how I learnt to be careful about this subtlety of phrasing Maugrim fucked around with this message at 19:03 on Nov 9, 2019 |

I do actually accept that the realities of politics mean that short of an enormous landslide, many of these policies will end up being moderated or quietly dropped/traded away/amended into oblivion/voted down in Parliament. But that's why it's important to have an ambitious and inspiring manifesto in the first place And to win a massive landslide of course

Forcing yourself to smile and say "thank you" at a compliment is a really good exercise, both from this perspective and because it acknowledges that the other person went out of their way to pay you that compliment. Had about five different flyers from the Libs, with the usual EU election bar chart. But nothing from Labour. There is definitely prioritisation going on, and a lot of Labour safe seats are actually having trouble finding volunteers for local leaflet distribution because they're all out campaigning in marginals. I've only just received the first batch of letters to deliver to Labour supporters in my very safe seat, no leaflets for general distribution as yet. Plus a plea to let them know if I can do any extra rounds as they're short-handed.
