My #1 tip for drafty winter living spaces is to get a kit of heat shrink film, tape it to your widow frame, and use a hair dryer to bring it taut. If you have leaky windows it makes a truly astonishing difference.

Also I like to fashion my own japanese heating tables by putting a space heater under a table or desk and drape a blanket over it. Keeps you pretty toasty. Obviously you have to turn it off when you aren’t right there.

(Speaking of space heaters I’m a big fan of those bulb-based ones that give you instant heat. They basically only heat you or a small area right around you so they’re great if you will be spending most of your time in one spot and don’t want to waste money on a blower heater that tries and fails to heat the whole space.)

Everyone else has pointed out the wonders of layering but count this as another vote for the voodoo warmth of thermal underwear.

This reminds me of a favourite show, Better Off Ted, in which a memo gets sent out that employees must notNOW use offensive and insulting language in the workplace. Episode 8 in the second series, but all of it is worth watching. I can’t find any great sources for linking the original clip, but the actors tried to make each other laugh by being as completely filthy as possible, and if you like cursing you’ll probably enjoy this:

I grew up in the states but I’ve lived in Europe and now live in Canada. Anyone who argues for that sort of policy is evil, flat out. 1 in 4 Americans has foregone medical treatment because they were worried about the cost (and imagine that ratio once you take out all the people above a certain wealth threshold). When I was younger (now 30s for reference) we would get threatening letters in the mail about subscribing to the ambulance service so that we wouldn’t be charged hundreds or thousands in the case of an emergency. One Ohio town recently suggested stopping emergency services to any household who’d already called in one drug overdose.

I keep telling myself - you can afford to bugger off and Canada has jobs, legalization and the Tories aren't so loving bad. and then I feel supremely guilty about it - jobs are all petrodollars, legalization was a sop to give a blackface loving liberal prick power and tories are tories.

yep. I'll always be pessimistic about everything - I've made peace with that - but loving go down swinging.

If anyone ends up in the second best London, first pint’s on me. And while Trudeau is pretty melty, legalization (which mostly only white stoners bitch about because they weren’t as adversely affected by enforcement) and child care funding doesn’t get enough credit. I’m not happy about the pipeline, but according to statscan, job growth has absolutely not been all petrodollars. Canada actually needs a real leftist to unite everybody who holds their nose and votes for the libs against the Tories but it’s not as bad as, say, PM jo; Don’t get me wrong, Trudeau is still a casually racist fratboy PM and I would prefer to see a giant NDP (after properly returning to the left) win, I just think there’s better policies to yell at him about.

Keep in mind: these polls are only intent, not belief. These are their best guess at who’s going to show up to vote. The actual population is essentially tied. All these articles breathlessly repeat them without ever bringing it up. If you want to take vitamin d, you should, there just isn’t much clinical proof showing it does anything. Anyway, if there were a case to be made for it, supplementing it to food would be the right way to go. It’s added to milk, with vitamin A in the us. And flour is supplemented by law in the uk, so it isn’t as if there isn’t a handy local precedent for it. I’d wager a number of milk alternatives are supplemented to boost the nutritional value, so if there was a good reason or demand, vitamin d could just be added to the mix.

Uh Vitamin D deficiency is a real thing with some pretty lovely effects. We definitely do not get enough via sunlight in most parts of the northern hemisphere, considering actual sun time and skin exposure due to clothing. Sunscreen also means far less Vit D synthesis in summer months. This leaves food which is hit and miss due to low dose and affordability of other natural sources/aversion to eating offal.

https://examine.com/supplements/vitamin-d/

Vitamin D supplementation is likely to fail if you're insulin resistant or maintain a low fat diet because you're not going to be tapping it back out of body fat at any discernable rate in the former or taking it on in the first place in the latter.

On the last page there’s a good article talking about this, though:

https://www.aafp.org/afp/2018/0215/p254.html

There’s just not a lot of good evidence that supplementation does a lot if you don’t have some kind of acute deficiency that’s been diagnosed. Even for people with low serum levels of vitamin d. This is on top of how many supplements have way, way more vitamin d than you’d ever need. The people who could be most concerned are vegans who don’t go outside, see the sun ever. And I’m not making a joke there, but I suspect this thread / forum probably has a higher incidence of such a group than the standard population.

Politico is AMAing the election and I found this interesting:

Redditpolitico posted:

After holding back during the last month, the Conservatives are now the biggest spenders (for December 8, the latest day available within Facebook's ad transparency tool) with £4,506.

In comparison, the Brexit Party (which had similarly held back in recent weeks) is second, but only spent £548 yesterday - so not really in the same ballpark. Labour comes third, with just £498 in spending, while the Liberal Democrats -- the party that has spent the most on social media ads since the beginning of the election - doled out just £50 yesterday.

What does this tell us? That in the final days before Thursday's vote, the Conservatives are finally ratcheting up their spending to woo supporters, while the other parties - so far - are holding back a little to likely make a final push in the final days.
