As someone who just 100%ed Shadow recently (literally the week of the final update patch, in fact, they had to bugfix a treasure for me to do so), I'll definitely say it's the weakest of the three, but it's not garbage? It's just got three incredibly bad ideas bundled into it.

a) gently caress that village so hard. It's big, it is weirdly unoptimized (swimming back to it from a side dungeon at one point it actually made the game pop up a "NOW LOADING" message over my screen), and about 60% of the game takes place in or directly around it, which leads into...
b) "We went to all the trouble of making a cool mix and match set of gear for bonuses and dress-up and we're locking you into a region where you must wear one of 3 outfits all game long. And one of those three is DLC. And if you ever visit this area we're going to auto-equip one of those three over whatever you had on."
c) Combat, especially if you like to be a stealthy hunter, is better than ever. The tombs are better than ever. The game has decided to balance these by going about 30/70 on them and the massive weight of the tombs (not counting the fresh DLC stuff that's all designed around one concept apiece and makes a tiny mini-campaign, which rule) mean that you miss combat more and the tombs become very, very repetitive by endgame if you're not spacing them out with... nothing, there's nothing else.

If you dug the last two, I'd say it's worth it, especially cheap (and ESPECIALLY with the DLC, which owns), but holy poo poo it is no contest which entry in the new stuff is the weakest now that this exists. However, just like the last two games, when it goes all in on combat for a little while, it does kick rear end (looking at you oil rig sequence)

i like the new tomb raider games but it's quite offputting how they kept redesigning lara's face in each one. also i felt bad for the severely friendzoned sidekick character

I tried Ori (controller kept connecting and disconnecting, didn't register inputs properly and for some reason X+LT swapped between full and windowed mode), Frostpunk (in game cursor didn't work, only the Windows one, deleted my saves or didn't save properly), Metro (horrible slowdowns) and State of Decay 2 (which worked pretty well), so sometimes the app does makes the games unplayable. On the other hand I think I'm the only person who has complained on the forums of these kind of problems, so GamePass is probably still a good bet.

It keeps deleting my saves and redownloading entire games for no reason. It's still a great value but it's been buggy as poo poo for me

I'm watching a let's play now and the main character's biggest accomplishments so far are "berating the sidekick radio tech guy for not giving her the exact answers she wants" and "taunting her audience about betting they wish they could do what she's doing right now but they can't haha."

Another weird thing is that she seems to have absolutely zero sense of awe or wonder about where she is or what she's doing. The opening is a tiny bit expressive with stuff like "my grandma and I used to dive and I was entranced" but in the actual game it's different. One of the first things you see is the gigantic whale floating by and the un-hesitant first thing out of the character's mouth is something impatient like "how long does it take for the scanner to work" followed by the tech saying "well it depends on several factors" to which she replies "Oh, so you don't know. Got it."

In terms of other retro metroidvanias, Environmental Station Alpha is excellent and enormous. Axiom Verge is pretty good as well... i'm sure there are tons of others but my mind is blanking

The section on 'possible obstacles' (or whatever kickstarter calls it) seems actually pretty circumspect and thought out, which is nice. No plans to try and cram it onto the switch, aware of the dangers of rampant stretch goal bloat, etc.

I would love a mod for eternal that gives you more ammo and scales back the cooldown poo poo. Obviously a lot of people are fans and enjoyed the game but it was a significant step down in plot and gameplay from 2016 for me

I feel like the Tomb Raider reboot death animations get way overblown, but it's been a minute since I played that game. At the time I mostly recall thinking they were in the same vein as the various horrible ways Leon can die in RE4, or Isaac in Dead Space. Personally i find those entertaining, although i can't blame someone for getting grossed out
