Also there is no fence on the Irish border. The last thirty years of Irish politics have hinged on the border being as invisible as possible.

There's a legit solid chance of that. The queen has reigned for longer than most boomers can remember, and is really good at keeping out of politics so no one turns against her for her views - even most republicans are more opposed to the institution in principle than the queen herself. Prince Charles on the other hand has been a lot less insulated politically, and doesn't have the long familiarity either. Having the monarch change for the first time in nearly seventy years is going to get a lot of people thinking about it that never did before.

Also the racism. The sort of people that are big fans of the royal family are also the sort to care deeply that a part of it is black now. It's barely concealed at best.

I'm unclear why people who appreciate Lovecraft's stories are somehow not allowed to recognize that he was a massive, racist weirdo.

I think a lot of it is that once you're aware of it, his bigotry is really clear in his writing - a lot of his stories are about unapproachable monsters intruding on human life and even mixing into it with cross-breeding etc. So if you're a fan of his work, and the work is fundamentally about being racist, it can be uncomfortable to think you've been such a big fan of outright bigotry, leading one to reject the idea.

I think that's what Gaiman was getting at in the quote that started this derail - that the appealing parts of his stories (and the genre they spawned) wasn't the bigotry, it was the existential fear behind it, and that's okay to relate to.

There's a whole extended and pretty graphic fight scene that only works as humour if you think his girlfriend is just a man in a wig.

If you think of her as a woman, it's not only distinctly uncomfortable to watch, it has no basic comedic element to it. It's a man punching a woman in the face - where's the comedy in that?

E: it was a fundamentally-flawed episode at the time and it has only gotten worse with time.

It's been a long time since I saw the episode, but I thought the joke was around her being a better fighter than him. Cause men are good at fighting, see. Still transphobic, just a bit more slapstick.

As far as I know, in German law it is very illegal to espouse Nazi views, so twitter and other platforms actually have effective policing for german users because Germany is actually willing to prosecute that stuff.

This is something a lot of chuds are likely to be stung by, but rather harder for them to weaponise.

This is effectively saying "if you ignore social constructs, the world hasn't changed since before social constructs existed".

Even if he wasn't intending the dwarf women as a metaphor for trans people... he was literally writing trans people. Cheery, Hamcrusher and the various others were assigned male at birth and later identified as female. You could argue that it's only because of dwarf culture that they were male-assigned in the first place, but nothing in the books actually says that; their genitals are never mentioned. Why would they be?

Given his views on other matters I doubt he would have been disappointed to find out what he'd really written anyway.

It's the difference between "I have never found a trans person attractive" and "I could never consider a trans person attractive". You don't have to date anyone you don't want to and no one will refute that, but if you're deciding you don't want to without even actually considering whether you really would then that is literal prejudice.

As far as I can tell, the 13-year-old complained that they came across a porn fic that wasn't tagged as porn. The doc writer says they're wrong and it was tagged as "lemon", which apparently means a porn fic.

Also that the 13-year-old imagines dating a 15-year-old character of some sort, and someone is saying that one day once they grow up that'll be totally paedophilic and they'll have to stop?

If you aren't familiar with the story, a hedge fund took out a short position (essentially a gamble on a stock going down) on Gamestop corp, far in excess of the actual shares that exist for the company. I think that hedge fund also got into a bit of a fight on Reddit's big investment sub? Either way they pounced on it and started buying into Gamestop in a big way to cost that hedge fund massively, putting it billions in the hole and I think pushing it to bankruptcy. As far as I know they're still getting people to buy in.

It's not particularly politically divisive (at least in that both the left and the right consider it very entertaining). If it weren't for him trying to say it was spearheaded by the whole MAGA thing, I'd call it an outright good Garrison cartoon.
