I'm kind of hazy on how history started drifting so hard that the Dementors needed to be out in full force in the first place, like did Sephiroth arrange for Cloud and friends to be strong enough to decisively whoop the Turks or for the Avalanche trio to survive without time cop intervention? Did he make Barret decide Cloud wasn't worth bringing to Reactor 5 until he was short handed or jog Hojo's memory?

Did he plant like half a mile of explosives on the highway outta town because that one was just kinda random?

Newer FF and RPGs in general resort to like a group of 20 or so core species and then palette swapped them to hell and back.

I was honestly disappointed that SOLDIER 3rd class dudes showed up around the last trek up to plate and were total chumps, like small fry compared to a Helitrooper. Thought they'd save that crew for a Roche rematch with a better showing or something.

I was thinking about how the Shinra Building sequence was probably the one part of the remake that I'd say is handled worse than the original, and I was wondering if anyone can make any sense out of the sequence of events involving Sephiroth, because it seems absolutely all over the place compared to the (more or less) straightforward nature of what happens in the OG.

So my understanding is that Sephiroth (or clone #2) breaks into the lab and grabs Jenova, then walks over to the president's office (meeting no resistance along the way), pushes him over the balcony instead of killing him, turns invisible, hangs out in the room invisible for a while, changes his mind and decides he wants to kill the president after all, becomes visible again and starts stabbing everything in range, boss fight!

Is that more or less it or did I miss something obvious that makes the sequence more coherent?

Sephiroth has a fairly deranged fascination with Cloud now imported in from the rest of the franchise, so instead of killing Shinra and leaving a message he decides to see if he can have some fun with his old buddy by properly doing it right in front of him and hell let's impale Barter for shiggles.

Possibly Sephiroth actually thinks this is communicating something meaningful to Cloud but he's speaking in full on Kingdom Hearts monologues at this point so all that can surmised is that the escalation of horny in Midgar is affecting him as well.

I specifically remember Zack and Aeris having several dates and there was this odd little sequence were you collected a bunch of different parts to make a flower cart for her and you could decide how it looked and I remember her looking at the one I made and just kind of going "Hmmm" in an uninterested way.

But that doesn't matter, the reason that scene was in the remake was some executive at Square said "Our fans love Zach, find a way to bring him back into the Remake series" and the writers are Square are lazy so they pooped this out.

I mean not really, Cloud just needs to have the Buster Sword and for Zack to be absent so his broken mental state can start cribbing off Zacks character sheet. It could be as complicated as alternate or merging timelines or as simple as Zack getting mugged by dementors and spending the first part stuck in a final destination film until the crew deals with the Destiny situation.

You misunderstand. I didn't say that I have some sort of faith that these mysteries will be answered in a satisfactory or good way. It's just, they are mysteries that have been set up and seem to be major plot points this time. Will they fumble it? I dunno, maybe. Just like I have no idea why Sephiroth, Aerith, and Cloud seem to be able to know the future to varying degrees, I also don't know if the writers are going to pull this off. I'm just saying, this is clearly the path they're taking.

I mean thinking on it Sephiroth one way or the other is essentially Jenova, an interplanetary parasite that infects a planet to the apparent end of devouring it's lifestream or something. Such a predator could reasonably have means of circumventing defense systems like the Whispers. If the original game could be considered the planets ultimately acceptable outcome then It's not impossible Sephiroth could have deciphered it's game plan as part of his extended stay in the lifestream and is now reacting accordingly.

Aerith could having understanding of this future due to her status as an Cetra. Cloud is having flashes of it either due to his Hojo inflicted connection to Sephiroth intentionally or otherwise.

I want the obnoxious Gold Saucer haunted hotel to be regularly returned to as a place the party discusses important heavy events as bedsheet ghosts compete with Cait Sith to kill the mood.

Sephiroth needs to be louder angrier and have access to a time machine, and whenever he isn't around other characters should be asking "wheres Sephiroth?"

The game is very clearly leaving aerith living or dying up in the air. What’s obvious is that something is going to have to replace this plot point. Either another character needs to die in her stead or something monumental has to happen that emotionally effects new players and players that already know the original plot.

This is the same thing I was saying about kalm and mideel earlier, they’re both overly long segments that break up the pacing of the game and occur right after huge plot moments in the OG to slow the pace down a little. Neither are bad segments in their own right but because of their position in the game it will be almost a requirement to move where that exposition happens to give the individual episodes of the remake a logical story format that doesn’t feel like poo poo.

It wouldn’t surprise me for instance if cloud has his kalm exposition moved to nibelheim (where it logically makes more sense) and we get another sepiroth fight with some George Lucas-esque “it’s like poetry , it rhymes” moments. If zack is an actual character relevant to the plot in the remake I could easily see cloud “dying” in place of aerith at the nibelheim sequence and being thrown into the lifestream. At this point zack steps in as party lead and you play through a decent chunk of part 2 like this until the party eventually finds cloud in say, the northern crater. The remakes are already telegraphing the events of kalm/mideel and the plot revelations held within and it feels like it’s doing this because it knows kalm/mideel either need to be removed or reworked to make this flow as an episodic game. Pulling the old MGS2 switcharoo is something that gives the game a major emotional moment and then gives you another one when you pull cloud’s rear end out of the lifestream in northern crater to endcap the episode.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is that I expect square to follow all the relevant plot beats but rearranging them or changing the context around them to streamline the story. If they’re keeping zack as an actual plot relevant character and not a cute fan service flashback then I fully expect episode 2 to try to emulate MGS2’s major meta moment without having the balls to follow through completely.

Take it all the way, have Sephiroth give Cloud so many green tinted headaches visions that he's succumbed and is actually cooperating with him by the time anyone finds him. Like show me what the gently caress Sephiroth actually wants out of that relationship, If they want to wuss out then later on your highest affection character (Barret) can snap Cloud out of it with the power of truer love.

I'm actually really interested with what their going to do with Rufus going forward. Like in the OG he rolls in all ominous and gives a speech about abandoning his daddy's methods and ruling through fear but like... He doesn't. He is in fact substantially less evil then his dad if only because by the time he shows up Sephiroth is firmly the baddy and the game can't give him screen time to do poo poo destroy like an 8th of the worlds largest city in the world just to kill a 5 man terrorist cell and also their temp.

Like I think the meanest he gets is trying to steal Cid's plane that one time and the attempted execution of Tifa and Barret but like, they were kinda dedicated to the destruction of his ...nation? and conducted terrorist actions to that effect. It's not particularly unreasonable. Beyond that he's just throwing everything against Sephiroth, the missile only fails because Meteor is slightly bullshit and the Sister Ray is actually integral to victory. Thats more effective action then the Planet itself has managed by that point.

Now in the Remake Daddy Shinra was eviler then ever, dude did 3 9/11's in a 3 days. Rufus didn't even bother with a speech, he cut straight to channeling raw sexual energy and also Gun Kata at a random twink on the roof and toured his HQ wandering why nobody else has noticed it's phenomenally haunted. Now there's an uncertain future and maybe a war with Wutai rolling up, and supposedly a terrorist organization that is more then 5 people and their temp to contend with. His wet works division have noticed they are the baddies in a way that finally bothers them. A stupid puppy that is also a genuine rogue SOLDIER first class is wandering around looking for his deeply troubled best friend and Roche could be loving his motorcycle in the lobby at any moment.

These are interesting days at Shinra, and I want to know more.
