realtalk: if you will dip into the manga well, Uncle From Another World is a solid parody of the genre. Guy goes into a coma 14 years ago, the family goes to pieces arguing what to do with him, and his nephew ends up there when he wakes up after having had a whole fantasy adventure in another plane of existence. Except the uncle was a mid-90s Sega otaku so he had a miserable time learning magic and being surrounded by all these warrior women and he never learned anything because he just figured out the spell to wipe his memories and cast it whenever he might have been on the verge of a breakthrough as a person. It's pretty comedic and while it makes a randy joke or two along the way, it's pretty funny and gets some bonus points if you, too, were the sort who would laugh at the fact that this guy's first love was the pilot of Seven Force.

The entire point of the game is to say "oh, did you think atheistic libertarianism was bad? Well guess what: religious communism is also bad." I've never heard Bioshock 2 held up as the good story one, just the best gameplay. The story thing is all on Minerva's Den, a DLC that prototyped an entire genre by going "what if we used the audio logs, ambient world building, and exploring this weird world for purposes of narrative over SICK COMBAT EVENTS NON-STOP BETWEEN CUTSCENES".

NikkolasKing posted:Also who was the person who said they didn't like Episode III's music? I've always seen a few scattered haters of the game but one thing I've never heard criticism of was its score which is a triumph and if anybody cares one bit about music, they owe it to themselves to find XSIII's soundtrack and listen to it. FWIW: we did our first post-holiday recording today and I brought this comment up with Matt to dig in. Matt posted:Most of the tracks are pretty bland orchestral or rehashes of previous tracks if you listen through it. I keep going to put something in the show and I check my notes (I track what I've used where to avoid duplicates) and find out I've already used the song it's quoting in XSI or XSII. When I'm listening through an OST I try to find things that grab my attention or have enough melodic or rhythmic shape that it's memorable, and everything that catches my ear is something which hooked me in a prior title already. I don't want duplicates.

I will repeat the same thing I do every time Death Note comes up: the best version of Death Note was the contemporary-to-the-series live action film trilogy. This is because it decided that it wasn't going to be a 1:1 adaptation. Spoilers for films 2/3: L outmaneuvers Light by writing his own name in the book and giving himself that maximum-length year to live period... meaning he can bait Light into trying to kill him openly, which doesn't work because he's already got a note written for himself, and so Light is arrested and defeated. The third film then has a knowing-he-can't-die-yet L decide he's going to try and change the world for the better, becoming absolutely reckless and taking on an ebola-wielding bioterrorist with zero fear of catching the disease being what does him in. His final act as he captures the guy up against his time limit is saving an orphan who goes on to become his successor... M.

I'm firmly with you that Sellers is in the most absurd moment of the game, but my candidate is a little into disc 2: the incident where you get to the center of a massive battleship and he just sasses you endlessly, tells you "this was a trap, dummies", exposits at how loving bad Jr. is at family and seeing the obvious, and then he floats away and goes "you expected a boss fight? It sucks because the incredibly frank video that he posted but won't make public is so much more fascinating than the thing he put out to try and keep himself in the algorithm's graces edit: what the actual gently caress at the actual ending of that OVA or some of the footage he couldn't use in the main one for age restriction reasons: somewhere in the middle magic goes awry and clones the MC, so he SHANKS HIMSELF AND THE CLONE VISIBLY BLEEDS OUT AND DISAPPEARS, and then in the final act the protag dies in a bike chase, causing him to enter a dream realm filled with naked witches, at which point his love for the girl wins over the god of that plane so he is revived, and POPS OUT OF HIS OWN COFFIN in a hermaphroditic form fused with the witch. DC Murderverse posted:[...] Cruella and Maleficent where it just uses a character and spins off in its own directions. The latter end up being most interesting just by virtue of having to have some level of creativity to them. Cruella was the closest I got to wanting to see one of these because the setting and vibe were mildly interesting (and also Emma Stone) So I actually just saw Cruella this weekend for the first time, rented it as part of a mother's day hotel trip, and I'll say this much: aside from the stinger* it was a very weird, never-boring film? It doubles down on being a period piece with the constant 60s-into-70s rock score, but then does a lot of fake outs and isn't afraid to go gently caress reality as rooms full of cameras and laser vaults show up in a fashion designer's house, and every single revelation and double-cross escalates to the point where we laughed all the way to the end. It in no way makes sense as a prequel to 101 Dalmatians, but "puppy-killer takes on admitted multiple-murderer in the fashion world" was a hell of a ride. Highly recommend. I legitimately wish more of their nostalgia-mine output was that weird. Cruella could have been a loving Kingdom Hearts stage. * I actually turned to my mother as it ended and went "it's so nice they didn't hammer home the Anita/Roger bit and let that be subtle in Cruella's story" and then the stinger ran where she gives them, independent of one another, Pongo and Perdita just to go "DO YOU GET IT" and I had to eat crow as she laughed.

Since it's stalled out and I feel less concerned about someone stealing my GENIUS IDEA: the long Sinfest chronology and read-through from earlier this year made me try to set up similar projects as video essays but for comics which were more middle-tier and less overt meltdowns. I figured I'd do it as a kind of "remember the web comics of the 2000s" angle and hit up the ones who were still going, reached out to the creators on the pair I was starting with, who are active on social media... And got silence. It was a bit demotivating because I figured that was the interesting hook to work with, just being able to say "hey, what led to this art style shift in 2006? What did you pick up in 2014 that led to your schedule becoming way more consistent?" with a couple of specific questions, since it wasn't going to veer off into TERF town or drama by the end.
