fun hater posted:well, full confession: i come from a family of multi-generational alcoholics on both sides who gave me the genetic gift of pre-loaded substance abuse. the psychology and mechanics of why people turn toward specifically drug and alcohol addiction are something ive done a lot of looking into just to try to figure out whats wrong with me/them. however: i have an extremely difficult time conceptualizing the motivations behind gambling addiction that are not mired first and foremost in a personal desire to get rich quick in spite of all common sense and wisdom. i can understand the mechanics of why pulling the arm on the slot feels good to your brain. but the underlying initial psychological driving force (as i understand it) is rarely, if ever, financial desperation. the people who actually want to get rich quick tend not to be the gambling addicts. those are like, the tourists who don't know how to budget a casino visit and lose all their money in 30 minutes. the gambling addicts are the ones who put all their money into a slot machine and don't care whether or not they win or lose because the slot machine is providing a distraction from their lives, or otherwise provides them with a feeling that they become dependent on. one of the most striking things i remember reading interviews from gambling addicts is that many of them say they're outright annoyed when they win a jackpot- because when this happens, a guy from the casino has you sign a bunch of paperwork, and they don't want to do that- they want to keep playing slots. that, and the ones who say they're outright relieved when they run out of money because they can't pull themselves away from the machines. it's a self-destructive dependency but a lot of vices fundamentally are, and like people addicted to smoking and alcohol, many are fully aware that what they're doing is self-destructive but keep doing it because that's what addiction is. fun hater posted:omg i just watched this like 2 weeks ago with my mother for the first time and it was genuinely one of the best experiences of my adult life lol. its like a 3 hour extremely slow burn about the hosed up and insane relationship between henry II (o'toole) and eleanor of aquitaine (katherine hepburn) during one of the christmases where he permits her to leave her prison (its a cushy prison) to see her sons: john (nigel terry, and he's the shithead king john from robin hood legends and maga carta lol), geoffrey (john castle) and richard the first (a BABY anthony hopkins, and richard the lionheart). she kept pausing it to stop and give me the historical background of what was happening at the time for a few minutes before going back to it, which i genuinely loved and gave me the context i needed to fully comprehend what i was seeing on a historical scale. this was apparently timothy dalton's debut film and knowing this, he plays phillip the second pitch perfectly as a young man assuming a role he has to convince everyone he's suited for while surrounded by titans lol. ummmm really really good. i was engrossed the whole time but my fiance wanted to die so ymmv. i recommend seeing the movie with your mom so she can tell you facts about it the line "i want no women in my life. i could have conquered europe - all of it - but i had women in my life" is one of those random film lines that lodged itself in my brain and won't ever leave also John Castle is amazing in that film

the other thing that really strikes you if you like, actually interact with people with experience in queer communities is how many people simply do not fit the hyper-taxonomic idea of queer identities that the internet pushes. never mind that other cultures outside the west may have completely different ideas about gender non-conformation, you can meet people who just do their own thing in the west as well.
