playing on the hardest difficulty i think i struggled harder to get through the first chunk of tartarus in one day than i did doing kamoshida's castle in one day. then afterwards the game showered me with almost 50 twilight fragments and a bunch of sp recovery items so somehow i don't think the next chunk will be as hard. digging remembering the horror i felt playing as a kid having to agree with all these dumbasses that their self destructive plans / lifestyles were totally cool, p3 mc remains king sociopath.

It's still early for me but it's still kinda soft-confirming for me that P3 Male MC is the weakest character of the 'modern' Persona protags. It's hard to really get a read on what kind of character he is even though he's appeared in quite a few spin-offs now as his own character (Persona Q/2 and Dancing). Even just going from his social links he can read anywhere from apathetic to sociopathic/enabling. Not that he doesn't have his 'good' option choices, but they just end up making his 'canon' personality harder to read other than just being kinda quiet.

Yu got a lot of personality via the anime and then Arena, and Joker got a splash more. Even FeMC has a bit more personality via her dialogue options.

If you 100% P3 Igor flat out calls P3 Male MC an empty mask. His dialogue options are clearly based around just mindlessly agreeing with whatever whoever he's speaking with wants to hear, even if what they want to hear is self-destructive. His sociopathy is reinforced by how, in the original game, he had no time for his male teammates, because they didn't give him any s-link power. They've awkwardly addressed that by giving you hang out options, which is better than nothing but still not a full s-link.

(lets not even think about how in the original he, by default, was cool with cheating on all his female s-links who were romanceable)

lmao at the Clairvoyant Relic boss on Merciless. Even debuffed, he will still repeatedly kill all your party members (since they'll always die if he chooses to attack the same one he just hit with their weakness a second time). And he has so much health that you need to hit him like 20+ times with your strongest attacks.

The best I've done is just getting him to half health.

you can get inugami as a card at that point who comes with poisma and foul breath and is weak to an element the boss doesn't use. just have your other guys guard / heal while you hit the boss with foul breath and poisma. once poisma hits it doesn't go away and you can just guard while the boss kills itself.

status effects are really good but its a pain figuring out which ones enemies arbitrarily ignore

Yukari is being mean to poor junpei in both versions but the p3p one comes across meaner thanks to the portrait specifically illustrating yukari’s annoyance and the va’s tone / enunciation.

This feels like a side effect of the original game only having the instant kill spells for light and dark. Those were only worth gambling on if an enemy was only weak to those elements and even then it was still a shaky proposition

You could easily do a random encounter-clearing build focused on the later tier death spells with the respective boost passive. I remember getting through quite a few floors spamming DIE FOR ME. Not so incentivized to do that now that you have arcana drawing though since you won't do any all out attacks.

It's no less silly than them getting a fully functioning sapient robot in 2009. The only reason subsequent Persona games aren't set in the Detroit: Become Human universe seems to be because the Kirijo Group lost the hard drive with instructions on how to make them.

That's the thing though, even when it becomes easier (once you get easy access to the Ma- spells later) it's still just busy work to keep the buffs up. I'm not saying it's difficult or anything, but at higher difficulties you basically want to keep the buffs/debuffs up constantly, which is easy but still makes fights take longer.

You're doing something wrong imo if slamming a rakunda into a boss and a tarukaja into your mc isn't turbo charging your damage so fights end way faster.

Dang, did you guys playing on Merciless manage to get to floor 22 on the first night? I'm getting my cheeks clapped. Made it to floor 11 and I have like zero resources left.

It's the hardest thing to do in the game. If you didn't it helps to get the x amount of mad bulls available at that point to help with SP. Eventually you'll get physical attacks and you can save your sp for healing. If you're really desperate the shadows on the first floor are weak to strike attacks and can be farmed for arcana drops.

After you get past this part you get showered in twilight gems from exploring areas you didn't have access to yet and then from s-links / Elizabeth requests. I've had enough gems every month to open every chest I encountered and have enough left over for at least one full heal from the clock.

I think one other problem with P5 is that the final month doesn't have as good of a 'doom and gloom' feeling compared to the other two modern games.

P3 had more and more of the city turning into the Lost. P4 was just gloomy with the fog everywhere and more people buying gas masks.

P5 you had... more and more people cheering on Shido?

People were acting pretty brainwashed about the Shido thing. But that's really only a threat to the MC personally, it's not an apocalyptic situation (until the apocalypse happens).

P4 has an actual character who is a city slicker who resents being dumped in a crummy small town, is a misogynist, and who preys on women, and who inexplicably gets his own social link that's borderline sympathetic/redemptive. I'm referring of course to Yosuke.

P3 merciless is definitely harder than P5R hard because the latter multiplies not just the damage you take but also the damage you inflict when hitting elemental weaknesses. P3 merciless you just take more damage. Also eventually in P5R you're going to unlock a million link bonuses plus the ability to summon persona well above your level (honestly a welcome change even if it does trivialize the game).
