Nashville is a really fun team this year and even though the Avs are obviously likely to win the series, it could be tougher for them than people think. Josi/Duchene/Forsberg with Saros in goal plus Granlund/Johansen/Jeannot is a nice group.

But yeah Avs are winning.
Avs will be fully healthy for the first time this season for Game 1, but Nashville is the team that makes me most worried about that staying the case as Nashville lays 30.1 hits per game (1st) compared to the Avs 21.5 hits per game (24th). Then again that's why Nashville averages over 12 minutes 30 seconds of PIM per game (1st) compared to Avs 9 minutes (12th), so maybe the Avs will get some advantages from powerplays.

Not in the playoffs this year, but give it a few hours.

The first round usually occurs during Ramadan so Kadri is hangry from fasting all day then having to play, but because of the Olympic break this year, Ramadan ended yesterday. Kadri will be clean this year now that he isn't hangry.

Also, Kadri has vastly cleaned up his game, his reputation is a bit undeserved at this point, imo.

The AHL playoffs start today too and the divisions are all different sizes to minimize travel costs for the teams so the playoff bracket is interesting-looking

a bunch of best-of-3 playoff rounds all hosted at the higher-seeded team, then a re-seeding of the teams that qualified after play-in round, and then a normal best-of-7 series. 23 of the 31 AHL teams are in it.

Nashville is 1st in hits per game averaging 30.1 and 1st in PIM per game at over 12:30. They've got skilled players that can score (and when healthy Saros can steal a game) but then they'll also have games where they just goon it up and get wrecked by a team actually trying to play hockey. The Preds had 59 hits and 37 shot attempts last night compared to the Avs 47 hits and 69 shot attempts last night. The Flames/Stars game only had a combined 54 hits last night, Nashville alone outdid both teams.

Absolutely incredible performance by Ingram, a 0.961 save % on 51 shots. Kuemper was no slouch either, 0.962 save%, but only had to face 26 shots. If I were the Preds, I'd consider shooting the puck.

Jesus I saw people on twitter talking about how the Flames mortgaged the future to bring in Jarnkrok, Carpenter and Toffoli but I didn't realize it was this dire for them.. They only have 13 of their original 21 selections in the next three drafts... and no picks from other teams either. I don't know if I've ever seen a team on that few picks in their outlook on cap friendly.. Down to their 2nd, 5th and 7th round picks in the 2022 draft

They really need to win on Sunday lol
Avs are pretty close there too also with only 13 of 21, though I think have more high-quality prospects in their system than the Flames do and have a little bit more of the core locked up for a little longer.

Flames draft picks for the next 3 years are
2, 5, 7
1, 2, 4, 6, 7
1, 2, 3, 4, 6

Avs picks are:
3, 5, 6, 7
1, 3, 5, 6, 7
1, 4, 6, 7

though Avs get the 2024 3rd rounder back if they don't win the cup this year or if they do but Kuemper for some reason doesn't play in 50% or more of the games.

I like a team going for it.

Girard had a great game last night. He gets a lot of flack because he's made some bigger mistakes of the Avs defensemen and he gets pushed around a lot if the other team plays more physically. Replacing Girard's partner from Nemeth to Manson since last year's playoffs is much better. Apparently he had to get x-rays due to a blocked shot near the end of the game but Bednar said he'll be good tomorrow. On the third pairing D, Timmins being replaced by Byram is also an upgrade from last year.

It's so odd that the Avs played against their 2009 1st round pick (Matt Duchene) in the 1st round, 2009 2nd round pick (Ryan O'Reilly) in the 2nd round, and now will have their 2009 3rd round pick (Tyson Barrie) in the 3rd round. They didn't have a 4th round pick in 2009, so if the Avs don't make it to the finals it'll be because they don't have that draft pick to play against. That draft pick that the Avs traded wound up being David Savard who was on TBL last year but is on the Habs this year

Rantanen's only glaring problem right now is that he's getting pushed around too much for a guy his size. He keeps getting knocked off the puck or knocked down by guys smaller than him. Other than that he's playing fine and I like the forechecking ability of Nichushkin and Lehkonen on the same line too much to drop Rantanen down to the 2nd line, those two on the same line keeps the other team in their own zone an entire shift all the time, and LOC and Helm together have been able to do that as well as the 4th line.

https://twitter.com/NHL/status/1530386274317651970

Yeah, but he’s in a dangerous position because he’s only 5’ tall. Sure it sucks if he got hurt, but that’s not even a hit with much in it and he connects through the shoulder. Not every injury is a penalty and not every hit is a penalty.

But as a coach he should absolutely be complaining about it. Gotta try to influence the next game however he can. And when his team still goes out and goons it up unsuccessfully again in game 4 he will complain again.
Yamamoto certainly didn't help himself with the dangerous positioning either. Yamamoto never once looks to his right from about the top of the red circles in his own end all the way until the hit, so he travels half the ice surface with Landy at his right side and the entire time Yamamoto is looking left. Then after he accepts the pass he puts his head low, probably not even realizing that Landeskog has been 5 feet to his side for the last 5 or 6 seconds

Sorry for youtube screenshots, the play button won't work if you try to click it.

it's not a penalty because it's through the shoulder, and playing the body is the right move there for Landeskog, but it does suck a lot that Yamamoto got hurt. Seems like there were a lot of these kinds of injuries this year of a check through the shoulder/chest hitting the head, and the league should probably consider some kind of rule change to discourage this kind of legal-but-dangerous hit, but I doubt they will.
