I dunno, the green */3 two drop with Domain seems solid and all the typed duals it's not hard to get a little bit of value.

Not my favorite mechanic but seems fine overall.

Saw someone fly a little too close to the sun today in an early draft when they dropped a turn 2 Stronghold Arena and then on turn 3 cut their life total in half by grabbing a Writhing Necromass off the top.

They managed to stabilize and hold on for a good while after that though, it was impressive.

I think this might be the first set in a while that cards like impulse and the divination variants could be better than in recent sets.

I like the typed tapland duals a lot but also find myself missing the Capenna ones that you could sac in a pinch. Agree that Impulse and anything else that lets you rummage or loot feels much higher in value in DMU limited.

Mishra and Haphazard Bombardment were both clutch in a couple of games to keep the pressure on or knock out bombs on the other side of the table. Probably could've lived without the other Black cards, don't think I cast Sengir Connoisseur even once but Knight of Malice was an MVP early on.

Yeah but only two.

Deck
2 Extraction Specialist (SNC) 12
1 Castle Ardenvale (ELD) 238
2 Adeline, Resplendent Cathar (MID) 1
4 Thalia's Lieutenant (J21) 27
3 Chaplain of Alms (MID) 13
4 Dauntless Bodyguard (DAR) 14
3 Hopeful Initiate (VOW) 20
4 Brutal Cathar (MID) 7
1 Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire (NEO) 268
2 Mutavault (M14) 228
3 Sunpetal Grove (XLN) 257
4 Brave the Elements (M14) 10
7 Plains (DMU) 277
4 Luminarch Aspirant (ZNR) 24
4 Collected Company (AKR) 186
4 Brushland (BRO) 259
4 Temple Garden (GRN) 258
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben (VOW) 38
1 Sejiri Shelter (ZNR) 37

Sideboard
3 Rest in Peace (AKR) 33
2 Reidane, God of the Worthy (KHM) 21
3 Archon of Emeria (ZNR) 4
2 Soul Partition (BRO) 26
3 Wedding Announcement (VOW) 45
2 Skyclave Apparition (ZNR) 39

Not 100% optimized or whatever but it's been doing well so far. I'm maybe 55% against Mono-G, and about 50% against RB. Sideboard probably needs some tweaking before jumping into the event as well.

Chaplain is no Esper Sentinel but I find myself liking it a lot more than I expected. Nice place to rest some counters and the ward holds off early Portable Holes, Stomps, Fatal Pushes, etc long enough to get a couple points through. The back half is nice in the late game, albeit not as useful as the Recruitment Officer ability, and first strike helps in a pinch.

If I was running Mono-W I'd be running Recruitment Officer for sure though.

It's a very obvious trial balloon for them to split products into ever smaller sizes and gradually raise the prices over time to where you're paying more for fewer things. This time around the token pack is $15 and the Mastery Pass is $25, which is probably a savings compared to the usual $50 for them combined (: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/mtg-arena/mtg-arena-announcements-january-16-2023. We won't know for sure until we see what the duration and rewards structure of the Mastery Pass is.

Maybe that will be a one time exception for this particular set, but I doubt it and we're all better off not encouraging this trend to continue.

Yeah it feels like they went a little overboard with putting Toxic on a bunch of things, especially with so much Proliferate tacked onto various spells as an afterthought. I've done three drafts today, every game came down to "who can get more Toxic guys on the field first". Black seems stronger than all the other colors by a large margin. The compleated Planeswalkers are nuts, I blew out several opponents by dropping some early blockers in front of a turn 3 Jace.

Fun set but probably not going to be drafting a ton of this one.

Both are good, but as someone who came up during the decade long Weatherlight Saga I'm biased towards the latter naturally. The sweet spot is probably something like Shadows over Innistrad where you get what is essentially an interesting one-off bottle story in a setting with really strong thematics that benefits from the bonus of a well layered nod to a bigger multiset arc.

In retrospect I realized that they landed that so well that it really raised my expectations for March of the Machines and what not, but can't really be surprised lightning didn't strike twice. Just too many threads to pull together in 2.5 sets probably.

I posted it upthread, but definitely give the Naya Adventures list a shot if you've got most/all the parts for it, I absolutely beclowned a bunch of people in the event with it. it's a seriously powerful deck, able to withstand almost any matchup...except Creativity decks. nothing you can do against them if they've got an ideal opening hand. but it can outlast basically any other deck, ESPECIALLY if you can get even a single clover on the field, poo poo gets stupid. like, turn 4 or 5 16/16 hasted ornithopter stupid, and that's not even getting into multi-copied lightning bolts and stomps. pollen-shield hare is not a particularly amazing creature on its own in the deck, but if you can get one or two love struck beast token creations with a clover in play, or pia doing her thing, you can clover right into multiple 10/10 or bigger creatures out of nowhere and crush your opponent. you've got a ton of options.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjnvzh-Yqic&hd=1

decklist:
1 Jegantha, the Wellspring
3 Heartflame Duelist
4 Bonecrusher Giant
4 Edgewall Innkeeper
4 Lovestruck Beast
4 Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival
4 Pollen-Shield Hare
4 Questing Druid
3 Torch the Tower
2 Escape to the Wilds
4 Lucky Clover
1 Forest
1 Plains
1 Boseiju, Who Endures
1 Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire
2 Inspiring Vantage
2 Mana Confluence
2 Sacred Foundry
3 Copperline Gorge
3 Razorverge Thicket
4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple Garden

2 Declaration in Stone
2 Giant Killer
1 Jegantha, the Wellspring
2 Invasion of Gobakhan
2 Tormod's Crypt
2 Alpine Moon
2 Knight of Autumn

I've been running this the past week and it absolutely stomps people. I think there are some tweaks to be made - Questing Druid is a little underwhelming, mana base probably needs 2 Boseiju more than an Eijano, and I'm still not 100% sold on Pollen-Shield Hare - but it is much stronger than it looks on paper for sure.

Bringing the power level down is fine and probably a good thing in the long term, MKM just looks very boring. Not sure who missed Morph enough that they felt the need to run it back even with ward stapled on, and despite all the moving pieces (evidence, investigate, etc) it feels less synergistic than LCI. Making "Detective" a new creature type instead of using "Advisor" or something else that would support an existing tribe makes me think they didn't learn anything from the D&D set or the Party mechanic experiments.

I'm more excited about some of the stronger uncommons - Long Goodbye, Call a Surprise Witness, Gleaming Geardrake, Insidious Roots, No More Lies, and the Lighting Helix reprint - than any of the rares in the set, except for maybe nu-Massacre Girl.

Suspect is a better limited mechanic than I expected. There are some overlooked cards like Harried Dronesmith that stand out as enabling some very high value interactions. Anything that generates extra value out of disguised cards, like the RG centaur guy or the white 3-drop (Dagney?) are kind of insane, even if you get rid of them fast.

Overall the set seems fine, I agree with whoever said that this is a very bomb driven limited format though.

Not sure what the versions at recent events have looked like but I've been having success with this variant of the Rakdos Vampires deck on Arena:

Deck
4 Vein Ripper (MKM) 110
4 Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord (M20) 115
1 Beseech the Mirror (WOE) 82
4 Fable of the Mirror-Breaker (NEO) 141
4 Bloodtithe Harvester (VOW) 232
4 Thoughtseize (AKR) 127
2 Duress (M21) 96
2 Smuggler's Copter (KLD) 235
1 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (DMU) 107
3 Fatal Push (KLR) 84
1 Bitter Triumph (LCI) 91
2 Sulfurous Springs (DMU) 256
1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire (NEO) 278
4 Blackcleave Cliffs (ONE) 248
3 Cavern of Souls (LCI) 269
3 Mutavault (M14) 228
1 Hive of the Eye Tyrant (AFR) 258
4 Blood Crypt (RNA) 245
2 Blightstep Pathway (KHM) 252
2 Swamp (UND) 92
2 Deadly Dispute (AFR) 94
3 Voldaren Epicure (VOW) 182
2 Preacher of the Schism (LCI) 113
1 Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance (NEO) 276

Sideboard
1 Liliana of the Veil (DMU) 97
4 Leyline of the Void (M20) 107
2 Duress (M21) 96
2 Path of Peril (VOW) 124
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet (OGW) 86
1 Bitter Triumph (LCI) 91
2 Sheoldred's Edict (ONE) 108
2 Damping Sphere (DAR) 213

Main adjustments are 3x Voldaren Epicure and 2x Deadly Dispute, which provide some early momentum, card draw to dig for threats, and help with extra mileage on Bloodtithe Harvester. Also added 1x Beseech the Mirror, which I'm able to Bargain most of the time to find whatever silver bullet or get a Sorin on the board in a pinch.

Running 23 lands instead of the usual 25, but haven't felt much of an impact there. SB is cookie cutter, aside from the Sheoldred's Edicts for the mirror match.
