Not actually US news, but saw the news about the school shooting in Izhevsk and it took a minute or two to sink in that "Oh, that's in Russia!" and not in the US.

I like to think it's because of the lock that the US has on mass shootings ( the US has had 17 in 2022 vs Russia's 4 ) and not centerisim. ( with a dash of brain fog. )

From a content creator perspective (as observed by an outsider) it seems that moving away from slaving away for The Algorithm and producing content that you enjoy and patrons will support directly seems to be a much more fulfilling life.

The bad is that there doesn't seem to be nearly as much money from Viewers Like You, and certainly not enough to maintain the lifestyle of everyone whose currently making a living from content creation. But, that might change if not supporting creators meant you don't get whatever niche entertainment you enjoy.

I think it will be less content creators being able to make stuff - there's too many folks that are just scraping by right now to afford it. I'm pledging $3 on Pateron right now, and that's pretty much all I can afford.

The US politics thread is talking online creators and the online creators is talking about banking. This is a werid day on the Something Awful forums.

ANYWAY, the content creator whales on Youtube tend to be the first couple of people who find a particular niche first and keep making things without burning out.

I'm less sure about Twitch, but it tends to come more down to niche + wide circle of like-minded folks since a ton of streamers follow one another + ability to talk extemperanously to stranges for hours. I think all the folks I follow on Twitch except one musican on Twitch have day jobs, since it's harder to capture the market on "playing video games."

I barely listen to podcasts and I don't watch tiktok for the fear that it would become a massive time sink so I have no idea how to get popular on those platforms.

I think it's more a case of "we are taking a stand against Nazis!" and then it gets abused by people who think "Nazis" is "people we dislike."

Which usually turns into "how can we use this tool to hurt queer people?" almost always.

EDIT: See also, "how all queer content is porn in some people's hosed up minds."

For the many ills of the Biden administration (including some terrible nominees), he's also hit on some very, very good ones. Here's Alvaro Bedoya, who replaced Chopra on the FTC after he was named director of the CFPB, in a speech to the Midwest Forum on Fair Markets on September 22.

I strongly recommend clicking through if you find this topic interesting, as there are embedded links to more detail and citations throughout. Phoneposting makes those particularly challenging to embed in my post. It also has an audio version, if you'd prefer to listen rather than read.

While not a rural dweller myself, I do know several people who live in rural areas. ( All hail fandom, the great connector of people. ) One of them in particular is a cattle rancher and for all the work that the entire 3x generation family does they pull in a tiny amount of money. And everything besides beef is more expensive. Their satellite internet is twice as expensive for half the service than someone on the same fandom message board who lives in a more populated area gets.

Is the assertion cops wouldn’t shoot civilians, that they wouldn’t shoot strikers, or just that they won’t shoot them yet?

Because the last one is the only one I agree with. That train will get here at some point.

We're gonna go with a non-labor example for a quick second. Remember the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020? Remember how while plenty of Bad poo poo happened to protesters and how leadership were murdered, no cop machinegunned down the crowd and the facists that did kill people were punished?

To my knowlage, the only time you can cosplay in the parks is during the specially ticketed Halloween events. Even then you aren't allowed to wear full face masks.

This is to prevent small children from walking up to non-castmembers and thinking that they are really Belle or Chewie. Both for the child's safety and so the adults and teens don't get harrassed.
