So the Jays are in a lot better position going into this offseason as compared to last. All the key pieces are in place, they're not facing any huge losses like they did with Ray and Semien, and so they can focus entirely on adding.

They’ll probably be better next year

Berrios had a weird year and I would hope he can turn it around

Gausman also had a mysteriously awful BABIP year.

I assume they're not gonna just run it back because with Kirk/Jansen/Moreno at catcher they're probably going to be making at least one pretty significant trade. Other than just adding a fifth starter (assuming that Ryu spends the year in fake-retirement and they don't try Kikuchi again), they can upgrade at LF and 2B.

This year feels like a left tail result for these players. Next year looks like it could and should be a The Year.

I'm not sure what the Jays could reasonably do to improve their pitching. They paid for good-sized contracts with Ryu and Berrios, Ryu is out and is a question mark for next season, and Berrios wasn't good. Pearson was supposed to be their #1 Prospect, but he'll never pitch another inning at the major league level. The pitching just isn't there, and without pitching, there's nothing.

Pearson is a write off but a Manoah-Gausman-Berrios top 3 is in principle a championship caliber rotation, and you add Stripling to that and I think they're in the conversation for the best top 4 (though probably a step behind the Houstons of the league). The bullpen is okay to fine, and I think in principle good enough, but it would be pretty good if they could use the offseason (and maybe either Kirk or Moreno as the main piece in a trade) to bring back a top-level elite guy.

I don’t know what that means.

"There is no such thing as a pitching prospect." Term popularized with Moneyball to capture how pitching prospects just randomly burn out for no particular reason. While the understanding of pitching prospects has expanded greatly since then, you do still sometimes get guys like Pearson who accumulate a bunch of injuries that just kind of sap their effectiveness.

What would an Ohtani trade package look like? I feel like the Jays have at least the start of one in something like Moreno/Tiedemann/Gurriel but it's been a long time since I've paid such close attention to either the Jays' farm system or prospect trade values more generally.

My guess is the Angels would want a king's ransom under the expectation that anybody who trades for Ohtani is immediately going to go all in to extend him long term. Soto-level returns as a baseline, would be my guess.

This goes back to me not understanding prospect values. I'm with you that the trade would take a king's ransom. I just don't have a good feel on just how much the Jays would have to put together to ransom King Ohtani. I mean it obviously starts with Kirk/Moreno because that's the best trade piece they have to offer. And then Tiedemann is their next best prospect (I think) and Gurriel is a decent player being displaced. The question is, I guess, how much more and how good would the Jays have to add to that. (And, I guess similarly, what's the trade value of guys like Orelvis Martinez.)

It's not the wildest idea. It's definitely a bit of a risk to commit to Moreno like that in the offseason, but if you're right combination of high on Moreno and low on Kirk's defence, and then the trade return for Kirk is right, there's definitely worlds where you can justify it.

The HOF is above all else a museum, right? Museums exist to teach both the good and bad parts of history. Keep all the old criminals and bigots in, keep the new criminals and bigots out and use their faults and how they were overlooked in the past and less overlooked later to exhibit the cultural change surrounding and within the sport. I don’t personally consider PED or suspected PED usage criminal in that type of context and if the numbers say they should go in then they should.

I realize that’s a gross oversimplification and where the line is drawn will vary from person to person, but the Hall has a duty to teach the whole history of the sport IMO.

Induction into the HoF is supposed to honour the person which means it isn't simply a museum. It's bound up with various ideas about what baseball is supposed to be about, and what virtues baseball players are supposed to display. I think the cases for keeping out Bonds and Clemens are still naff, but I think the background ideas are at least (potentially) coherent.

(This is also putting aside some of the trickier issues that museums face even when they're presenting "mere" history.)

I mean, that's par for the course this offseason, it seems. Bassitt as #3 behind Manoah and Gausman is pretty solid, I think. Berrios at 4 and then... whatever they do for 5. Who knows, maybe Tiedemann can work his way up quickly.

I would expect Berrios to enter the season ahead of Bassitt in the rotation, with the idea that whatever was up with him last year was something capital-W Weird and they've fixed it through the offseason. After that, while it wouldn't be my first choice, I wouldn't be surprised if they enter the season with Kikuchi penciled in at 5 with the idea that they'll give him and Mitch White a few starts each before reaching for Tiedemann.

Trading a top 5 prospect for a league average bat is just loving insane
Moreno, Hernandez and Gurriel for Varsho and Erik Swanson is loving calamitous. Like they turned a top 5 prospect, a silver slugger corner outfielder and another starting outfielder into a middle reliever and a platoon bat.

Like, the Hernandez comp is bad enough but so far he seems like a far worse hitter then Gurriel (and also, as I said, has a pronounced platoon split).

e: Varsho, 2022 on his good split: 240/317/484
Gurriel 2022 overall: 291/343/400
