what's the general overarching opinion of etiquette on a high level character joining a babymode difficulty mission, is it acceptable or does it render the game really boring for everyone involved? the last weekly mission i have to finish up on my psyker is "pick up scriptures" and not only does that seem like it'll be a lot easier to knock out on baby mode, it's entirely at the discretion of the map board what difficulty it chooses to assign a scripture secondary objective to.

I think it's nice to finish the mission without wiping, so having someone in the squad with extra curios and better weapons and feats is cool. Even if you're bringing a plasma gun and a power sword to a tier 1 map, I'm pretty sure the other players will still have their hands full during mob fights, servitor interrogations, etc. You'll just be a little better positioned to help them out if they're getting overwhelmed.

I'd love to see more environmental variety in future maps, but I wouldn't bet money on it any time soon. I keep getting in-game dialog where one PC comments that they've heard there's a second city on the planet, before being abruptly cut off by the Sergeant Major telling them to stfu and drop the subject.

I'd think we'll see something develop there, so I'd expect more of the same type of industrial/cathedral/shantytown hive environments.

Edit: but I'm fine with that as long as there's variety in the objectives. Only so many times I can scan an area or restart a countdown with the world's lamest mini game before it starts to feel old. Combat feels great, though, and I finally found an autogun that owns hard enough to make me give up on my lasguns, bolter, and plasma gun.

I dig some of the ethical and/or theological debates between PCs, including whether or not abhumans have souls, with the squad's zealot claiming that they don't, the other zealot saying that they are granted souls by the Emperor's grace, and my veteran arguing that it doesn't really matter, and most of the abhumans he's met are better people than the humans. I'd wonder how much of that is absolutely generic class-based dialogue, versus whether there are personality types built by mixing and matching the multiple choice origin story at character creation - ie. my crime was sedition and my history was enlisted with a field promotion, and I've noticed that most of my character's dialogue is either professional military jargon or polite contempt for Imperial dogma.

I'd hope we get something resembling an actual plot with the new maps. Was a bit jarring to realize the Level 1 > 30 progression was just showing up at someone's desk for 15 seconds of "you need to work harder to impress me" or "there's a traitor among us (and you will have absolutely nothing to do with resolving this)"

is the bolter a good choice for the veteran? I got one and I tried it out in the practice area. The damage is really great, but I feel like the relatively small amount of ammo will be a problem for the vet, since I spend a lot of time shooting normally.

A bolter is great if you can use a power sword on anybody who isn't a ranged threat. A plasma gun is even better at dealing with ranged threats plus anybody standing in between you and them but requires better timing to use effectively. For the veteran, I think a lot comes down to personal preference. I have the most fun just using a semi auto lasgun to snipe or a good braced autogun for all around running and gunning, and high level lasguns and autoguns absolutely own. It's a game, you should have fun. If the tiny mags and long reload/cocking takes the fun out of using a bolter, go with something else, don't feel obligated to just stat max.

After a week of absolutely zero loot drops, I got three in a row last night, including a really solid lasgun that sets enemies on fire with weak spot hits.

Buuuuuttttt...

Now my weekly contracts seem to be bugged. I got some fairly simple ones. Complete 25 missions, kill 1000 scab with ranged weapons, and kill 1000 dregs with melee weapons. Easy. Except the game stopped keeping track when I got to ~700 dregs and ~400 scab and 4 missions, and it would be cool if it would start keeping count again.

Welp.

The core gameplay is enjoyable enough that it's worth playing, but man, this really is just a beta. Lots of games, especially multiplayer games, advertise content that will release after the game itself, but I can't remember the last time I saw buttons marketed "coming soon" in a notionally complete game.

I actually dig the partial reload system. If I've already dropped a half-empty mag from my lasgun/autogun/whatever before switching to melee, it only makes sense that I'd be empty on ammo when I switch back and need to reload.

With that said, I really don't love the lengthy cocking/readying animation any time I switch long guns and/or get knocked a few meters away by an exploding barrel. I guess the idea of a safety catch is archeotech.

There are cosmetics that you'll get by completing penances (aka challenges). Some are real simple like "reach level x" while others may require a little more effort.

There are also cosmetics for sale in the store that uses normal in-game earnable currency. Once you've gotten to the point where you can play missions on difficulty 4 and 5, you'll have more currency than you know what to do with. Those store cosmetics are unfortunately pretty much all just recolors of two or three outfits.

The store that requires real currency is also the one with the unique cosmetics. So if you want a fancy gold skull mask for your zealot or to dress up like a guardsman from a lore-specific regiment, that is thus far your only option.

With the latest patch, I jumped back in for the first time since last December, after Fatshark turned on the perpetual dogmode modifier and then went on holiday. Nice improvements in general, and I liked the new(ish?) map involving a deep dive into a library vault. I know the map's been available for months, but it was a first for me.

What I didn't enjoy is how I was somehow usually the best in my pubbie group at Heresy level, and hardly any veterans or zealots seemed inclined to check behind themselves, stay in coherency, or prioritize elites/specialists. The psyker and ogryn players at least knew what they were doing. And seriously, there's no reason anyone should be shooting at a daemonhost at that level. And yet.

To be clear, I'm not by any means a great player, but the fundamentals of the game haven't really changed in a year. Was there an influx of new players with the new patch?

Edit: or is it just a matter of people failing upward from Malice and never getting better? Back when I dropped off last year, level 4 was when some level of situational awareness became necessary

If you can handle Heresy without being carried, you can def handle Damnation, all other factors and modifiers being equal. Faster pace, more poxwalkers, tougher elites. The core gameplay is the exact same, so if you know the fundamentals for your class you'll be fine. But! Damnation is where you really want to have a good loadout. Unrelated to this particular patch, I'm glad the new penances are more based in skill and not based luck and/or griefing teammates like the original penances. I took a break last December and didn't come back to Darktide until this month, and it's nice that none of my pubbie teams have had players actively sabotaging the teams to try for self-destructive penances anymore.
