WhatEvil posted:

If your windows are 10% of your heating losses, replacing the glass in all of your windows from 2.8W/m²k to 1.1W will shave about 3.9% off your total heating bills. Though in reality it will be less than that because I think that the 10% includes losses through the frames etc. which won't change, and may not even improve that much with newer window frames.

So, may not be worth it? It will however increase comfort within your home - in particular it will reduce the "cold spot" effect near windows and also things like interior condensation - though if you get really efficient double or triple glazing the script can flip and you get external condensation instead.

As some others have said, dealing with drafts and improving air-sealing is likely to have the best payback since it's typically the cheapest thing you can do.

There's pretty much no indoor heat source that isn't terrible for air quality that isn't electric or has an outside exhaust pipe. Other than maybe 'heat big rocks up on a brazier outside and carry them in with thick welders gloves'.

Ethanol is probably the cleanest burning indoor fuel but isn't cheap.

White diesel (ultra low sulfur) in a kerosene heater is still going to be not great but much better than freezing.

Can any of you good folk who know anything about electrics tell me: do RCDs have an 'ampage' in the way that fuses do?

The water heater over the bathroom sink in the guest room of our block of flats is kaput and being replaced today. Anyway, it seems to be wired into the same circuit as the ground floor sockets and when the cleaner's tried to use it, it's been causing the RCDs to go and also blowing out the front door number keypad so muggins here gets 2000 old ladies knocking on my door when I'm trying to work complaining that their friends can't get in or whatever.

My concern is that once the heater is replaced, it'll start off again if for some reason it is overloading the ampage of the RCD **if** such a thing happens!
Breakers and RCBOs (RCD and breaker in one) have a rated current in the same way that a fuse wire does, and a curve, which is how long and by how much you have to exceed that by and for in order for it to pop. So a 32A breaker might withstand 40A for two seconds when a motor starts up, or 35A for a minute, but anything exceeding those will throw it.

RCDs/GFIs/RCBOs are different in that they detect current going where it shouldn't (like through your chest cavity to the tap or radiator that you're touching). They're designed to break with tiny currents like 20mA (0.02A) within the space of a couple of AC cycles, so 10s of milliseconds. If the RCDs are tripping that's usually a sign that there's an earth leakage

I don't think people really believe half of this poo poo that they say. It's more like a prayer card where if you keep repeating the lines then you'll be protected from the worst of the lovely hell you helped to sculpt.

That's why it often crumbles completely the minute its challenged with something equally simplistic like "I'd rather have the benefits there in case I ever needed them" or "at least it's all spent in the local economy and not sitting in some offshore bank account" (often just replaced with ranting about foreigners though, ymmv)

Absent any shift in suicide rates it sounds more like a subculture sprung up around the work and then some members of that subculture killed themselves, and members of other subcultures found it more compelling to blame "the kids dressing weird" again.

Yeah the round bottom induction ones always seemed weird and expensive, but the wok rings claim to work with round and flat bottom on induction while allowing you to lift or shift the wok.

Obviously you'd lose some of the safety by having a hot shorted turn on top of the inductor, but hot bits that burn you are a permanent aspect of the current gas hob so I guess I'd just not touch the spicy bit while cooking?
