Wresling Empire. A solo-dev project with a free-roam mode where you can murder people backstage, attend their funeral, then beat people up at the funeral.

The randomness is great. During my character's early days at Wrestling School I accidentally drank too much milk and pissed myself before a 1v1 with Mike Bail. Mike saw it happen and he gave me a handshake before telling me I should do it in a toilet next time. During our match he brought his Tag Team Championship partner, Shank to 2v1 me, so I broke both of their faces outside of the ring with a broom handle. The next week, Mike gave me a hug when he saw me.

Much later, after being picked up by Rising Sun Puroresu and going on a 20 match win streak, I picked up a ringing cell phone on the ground that resulted in my character's name being forcibly changed from DIEPHOON to Larry McIntyre.

I cannot change it back.

If you eat too much before your match, you might poo poo yourself during the Pay Per View! (Loud warning, also, poo poo warning)

Coyotes missions can definitely do that on vanilla missions due to random events like a VTOL swarm or House assassins or pirate mechs (those will at least hopefully shoot at everyone). Some of the events are helpful at least, like a friendly VTOL swarm. I think it at least in part depends on your standing with the House which controls the space you’re in.

Any mission with artillery is a difficulty multiplier though, especially since to kill it you’ll probably have to stomp through a bunch of other poo poo. There’s a few story chain missions with some really hard to deal with artillery.

Last time I played MW5 Artillery missions felt really bad since they force you to walk to all the corners of the map to destroy them or spend the entire mission dancing around damage indicators on the ground, neither of which is fun. Made me wish you could call in airstrikes using the map instead of having to paint the mark yourself. Probably better off just installing the mod that removes artillery entirely for the sake of fun.

I never tried Coyotes missions, sounds awesome.

However, that's just how good the gameplay is. It does help that the writing is generally pretty strong and if you're a fast reader you can skip dialogue line-by-line.

I like the superhero friendship simulator part of Midnight Suns, but if you don't they made it all skippable and they clearly labeled which dialog option makes which number go up for maximum gaming efficiency. If you think the gameplay might be your jam I urge you to try it, especially since they have already started selling it at a discount.

All of the upgrades are so small, they don't really feel consequential either, and the demo just keeps going on for what felt like forever.

This wasn't my experience at all. I had a bunch of runs where either I or someone I was teamed up with was completely overpowered by the end of the run. For me though the main appeal is that it's a turn based co-operative tactical game, but the players can all move simultaneously so turns don't take forever. Grouping with other players lets you take advantage of their status effects, like the Mosscloak having easy access to guaranteed criticals with their Marking abilities. Lots of fights were about trying to maximize my ability value while avoiding damage.

If I remember this run correctly, my build was based on stacking up dread via dealing magic damage, to then inflict huge damage with jinx. The Weaver also gets a bonus ability point and bonus ability power for having all enemies on the screen threaded, so I was trying to maintain that as well.

https://twitch.tv/videos/1714236316

In this run I was playing Mosscloak and I was able to stack ridiculous amounts of poison. (It's actually only 583 stacks of poison and 1/10 stun, I misread because of the display error).

https://i.imgur.com/OHddI7G.mp4

I had another run where I got an item that gave me +1 ability power on kill, so by the end of the run I had an extra 650% damage, it was nuts.

I'm interested in seeing what the game has to offer at higher ranked difficulties. The ranked mode gets harder as you rank up, which is also novel for a co-op PVE game. I'm also looking forward to the Dual Shields class because I wish more games let me dual wield shields.

Mr. Sun's Hatbox came out of nowhere for me but I'm very charmed by the demo and definitely will pick the game up when it comes out in 2 days. It's a sidescrolling heist game (almost like a less-simmy Heat Signature?) but you have base-building that's sort of a basic riff on X-COM and there are a bunch of hats you collect that give you different abilities and also you can just literally straight up Fulton enemies and items like in MGSV to send them back to your base and add them to your roster of playable characters or equippable gear. Very cute and weird.

This is out now, wondering why all the first reviews are in Chinese, but I enjoyed the demo enouigh to throw $13.49 at it. Checked out the dev's website (http://kennysun.com/)

I tried one of the betas and I did not like Exoprimal. I thought it was going to be "Earth Defense Force but with dinosaurs and a higher budget because Capcom."

Instead what you get is "You have a mission to shoot dinosaurs and you're racing another team for some reason, oh and now you're directly fighting the other team instead of the dinosaur threat because ???"

I bitched about this heavily during the post beta survey. They added a "PVE" mode in response to beta feedback, but based on the reviews it's just switching out the final mission segment with a PVE encounter instead of directly fighting the other team. You're still racing another team during the initial mission phases and the enemy can control a dinosaur and fight you during the match, which is still PVP.

I understand the game isn't what I want it to be, but I also have a hard time getting over thinking that if they just made EDF but with dinosaurs they would have a cool and fun game.

On the flip side of PvPvE games, I finally decided to check out Hunt: Showdown during the recent sale after seeing it get brought up here and watching some streams. It's pretty cool. The setting is unique, the PvE isn't great on its own, but as a layer of hazards to contend with during tense PvP action it's good. I'm not a great shooter but I'm pretty sound sensitive and a large part of the game is about detecting other players through sound.

I'm still in my rookie levels with locked MMR but I was able to sneak my way around the outside of a firefight at a boss, ambush the duo that survived the fight, then use their guns to take down the boss and extract, it felt great. The slower speed of firefights thanks to many weapons having long reloads or shot cycles makes the game feel different from every other shooter I've played, especially after coming off of a crazy game like Battlebit Remastered.

Wrestling Empire is unironically good. If you like wrestling you will get a kick out of all of the legally distinct replacements for popular wrestlers. The graphics are rear end but there's enough customization to have fun making your own dude and watching their story dynamically unfold depending on the random poo poo that happens during their career. You will naturally make friends and enemies, other wrestlers will cheat the system against you and in your favor resulting in drama. Sometimes management will gently caress with you and force changes to your character's gimmick or moves unless you negotiate a contract saying that they can't.

It's the only wrestling game with an "open world" that allows you to injure someone in the ring, then find them in the "hospital" and beat them more. People can get so injured that they die then you can start a fight at the funeral or just show up to pay respects. You can manually do your own stat training in the gym and recover your stamina with food, but if you over do it you risk pissing or making GBS threads yourself in the ring.

It's goofy as hell and it's a lot of fun. There's also a booking game mode if you prefer setting up matches and watching the AI go at it. I haven't tried it so I can't elaborate but I assume it gives you some objectives to fulfill to please different audiences.

Posted about this in the roguelike thread but the more I play I see that it's honestly pretty marginally a roguelite -- stumbled across Withering Rooms tonight and sunk a few hours into it and I'm extremely charmed. It's almost like Clock Tower meets a Metroidvania with some RL elements (lots of stuff gets carried between runs and you can get back to where you were pretty quickly with permanent fast travel unlocks, but the layout of rooms and enemies and loot resets when you die).

It's a super interesting twist on survival horror, the genre's resource management elements actually fit a Metroidvania game really well as enemies don't respawn (so far :tinfoil:) and you kind of want to carve your path through the map based on what enemies you can kill and what enemies you can avoid. There are some really cool systems at play like a "Curse" status effect that makes things more dangerous as it builds up (basically gradually transforming things from Disney's Haunted Mansion into Silent Hill World) but also reveals various secrets you'd never see without it. Magic is extremely useful and has a bunch of neat utility effects like distracting enemies or booby-trapping doors -- you can do cool stuff like burn sacred candles to prevent ghosts from passing the perimeter, etc. Definitely feels like one of those Steam hidden gems.

Also while the game is technically still in EA, seems like it's just a formality -- everything is complete, the dev is just waiting to coordinate with publishers on a console launch before officially ringing in 1.0

Gonna check this out thanks to your post and the good reviews. I'm not typically into survival horror style games but the random floor generation and the overall aesthetic visible from the trailer has me intrigued.

Spent most of my time soloing but sometimes other players on the server would call for help with a boss, or I'd run into another player out in the world and have some impromptu co-op. Stumbling into a wandering boss and having the fight take you into day time was harrowing and fun. Looking forward to playing through the PVE content again with 1.0 on a similar server setup.
