TehSaurus posted:I’m thinking they’ve never actually needed anything that wasn’t utterly trivial. My mom’s orthopedic surgeon prescribed her naproxen even though he knew she has chronic kidney disease. My wife has seen a litany of specialists over decades and it took one of the absolute best surgeons in his field to realize that she has an extra vertebra and maybe that is the cause of some of her chronic issues. I’ve seen a doctor fill a man’s circulatory system with glue, killing him. That doctor is still practicing and to the best of my knowledge suffered no consequences despite a rich and storied history of terrible outcomes. Doctors ignore and downplay common chronic conditions because they don’t affect white men. They are a key component of the apparatus of structural discrimination.

DickParasite posted:So much of the discourse on how the medical system fails patients is based on the experiences of women and marginalized groups, and rightfully so, given the magnitude of the failure. My experience as a cishet white dude is that doctors don't listen to me either. Solidarity I guess? Yeah, four years ago my primary care physician (who is otherwise good) told me that my tailbone pain was due to the way I was sitting but I'm probably going to have to have it removed. I had to talk to my physical therapist and rheumatologist, who referred me to a neurologist. It's been a huge pain in the rear end, so to speak.

TehSaurus posted:Reading it again, I can see how that came across. My phrasing was clumsy (I was mad!) What I mean to say is that there are certain chronic diseases that are less common among white men that are notoriously difficult to get doctors to care about. White men can absolutely have chronic diseases (some are even named after white men) and are not immune to getting hosed over by incompetent doctors. It's something worth being mad about! It makes me mad too!. I did not believe that was your intent and I am not offended but if we're looking to elevate the tone of this thread I thought it worth mentioning. My only two mask comments have been antagonistic. I'm a white guy but I'm skinny which means anyone bigger than me thinks they're safe to be abusive. I got some comments when I used to have long hair so it doesn't really bother me.

Honestly, having my life upended by arthritis a decade+ ago and learning how to live a smaller life has given me both a higher tolerance to the effects of this pandemic on my social life and a seething contempt for the people going insane because they couldn't go to a restaurant for like a month. Giant goddamn babies the lot of them.

When I had to get a five minute cat scan I was in two waiting rooms for an hour because they had one person working intake. Love those staffing shortages.

There's a possibility I might have to have minor surgery so if that gets scheduled before the novavax comes out I'll just get another mrna shot. Otherwise I'm happy to trust my mask for the biweekly-ish grocery trip and the occasional doctor appointment which is the extent of my leaving my house.

Rite aid was letting me make an appointment for novavax but I suspected it was just their system being stupid so I called to ask and they said they don't have it and don't know when they're getting it.

I had a pre-surgery visit to the hospital and I had to not laugh when the unmasked receptionist was asking if I had any symptoms. The actual staff were all wearing surgicals. Without my asking, one of them told me they were wearing them because it's flu season. Better than nothing, I guess.

Humira is no longer offering a sharps container mailback program due to supply chain issues and by Pennsylvania guidelines I'm apparently just supposed to throw the container in the trash. And if I don't have a container I should use a laundry detergent bottle? This is all extremely normal.

Pittsburgh Fentanyl Cloud posted:The point of a sharps container is that it is plainly and clearly labeled so the people handling it know what to expect, and as such it follows an alternate disposal route (usually an incinerator). Telling people to stick sharps into a laundry detergent bottle and huck it in the trash is basically saving money and subjecting municipal waste workers to increased risk. Also this program was free and I use those ginormous dispenser laundry detergent things which is going to be unwieldy. I have to call the Geisinger pharmacy tomorrow for a refill. Maybe they'll take up the slack. It's great that in the ~14 years I've been doing this it's gone from 1. The pharmacy is in Tennessee for some loving reason and they do the sharps program. 2. The pharmacy has changed and the new one doesn't handle this so you have you call the manufacturer. 3. The mail isn't picking up due to covid so you have to take it to the post and breath all over the employees which is safer? 4. The mail is picking them up again. 5. gently caress you use a bleach bottle.

So I talked to the pharmacy yesterday and I had a good conversation with someone who told me that they also haven't had sharps containers in a while (not surprising). Apparently she had been asking around and nobody knows anything! We jad a decent chuckle about the swing from "mail them in amd get a receipt from the incinerator" to "pit them imn the trash." Anyway I'm on two waiting lists now.

Oracle posted:Man I thought I was the only person these things hated. probably doesn’t help that I’m officially allergic to milk now. I had a tonsil so swollen it felt like it was blocking off my throat one morning and my tongue was angry and thick. All the convenient care doc (who was masked so probably actively contagious) did was test me for strep then go ‘it’s probably something viral’ and offered me antibiotics. I was like ‘don’t antibiotics do nothing for viruses?’ and she just shrugged and left. Medical workers give zero fucks anymore. I've had problems with oral allergies (cinnamon mostly but also mango and avocado) since I was a kid and rinsing with some golden seal root powder in water helps with the swelling, etc. It tastes like someone put a bag of lawn clippings in a juicer, so be warned.
