First movie I ever pirated was jason x on a 56k connection. Took forever to download and it was split into 2 parts. I never watched the second half of that trash.

I finally sat down and watched one cut of the dead and I loved it.

I knew there was a twist going in but I didn't know what the twist actually was. I thought it was going to be the fake horror movie they are filming turns into a real horror movie but that "twist" happens within the first few minutes and the remaining part of the horror movie section is still pretty bad and something feels off. It was obviously still a fake movie or just terrible. I wasn't expecting the second half of the movie to be a traditionally shot comedy/drama about the trials and tribulations of the director dealing with the logistical nightmare of trying to do a one shot and bond with his daughter.

It's not perfect by any means, there were a few moments where I felt it was pretty weak, but overall I really enjoyed it. Definitely a movie that benefits from you going in blind.

my one and only positive note at the end of the first episode was "this show has nice b-roll"

Probably would've been better if they had an actual score instead of a million pop songs too.

I'm going to keep with it for a few episodes to see where it goes but nothing has really hooked me yet. I keep imagining how much better it would be as a supernatual thriller then I remember it's just normal and get disappointed, probably because I'm thinking about the thing.

watched existenz at the alamo

my first cronenberg. I liked the practical effects. also I didn't realize it before but jude law is way over hyped as an actor isn't he? I mean he's not bad, just not as good as you would expect. maybe it's his accent. anyway I was a little bit disappointed by the film. I like the punchline at the end, I just wish I had gone in expecting a tight body horror exploitation flick instead of something more grand in scope. I spent most of the movie wondering why the plot was complete bloody slimy nonsense instead of vibing

I rewatched it recently too and had the same thoughts about Jude Law. I know he's a good actor but in Existenz he was just very blank and flat. He reminded me of the lead in Scanners so I was wondering if this was intentional from Cronenberg. In a way the entire film just felt like a lesser remake of Videodrome, with the altered reality making you question what is real and whats not but I found the pirate tv broadcasts and mind control conspiracies to be way more compelling than a wacky videogame.

Speaking of Cronenberg I just watched Nightbreed (the cabal cut) and man, that's an incredibly frustrating film. So much work and effort had been put into the creature designs and sets but it all falls apart because of the atrocious pacing. The first hour seems so rushed that you never really get a chance to care about any of the characters or plot threads and the last like 45 minutes is a messy action scene where characters appear at random in different locations, a brief 5 second scene of a monster being shot by the angry mob, characters appear at random in different locations, another monster being shot by angry mob. It was a complete mess that never flowed right. I'm a bit disappointed because it felt like it had all the ingredients to be an actual good horror film but for the director. I hated the score, a whimsical Danny Elfman garbage that did not fit the tone at all. Women and children being gunned down by cackling rednecks set to a soundtrack where you wouldn't be surprised to see peewee herman fly past in the background on his bike and honk his horn. I did like Cronenberg as the evil doctor though, he was very sinister and I loved his creepy serial killer mask. Just a disappointment overall.
