I swear I’ve heard more and more stories about surprise tax bills these last few seasons and I don’t really get how it happens because that’s all stuff that happens on the backend that you don’t really have to worry about if you get the bulk of income through payroll. My boss has zero dependents, doesn’t really get any money from investments or such, allegedly claimed nothing on his w-4 and in fact tells me he has it set up so they withhold an extra chunk per paycheck and still he ends up owing a couple grand.
