Half of the voting population gets their news from Fox, a network that has to legally define itself as an entertainment network so that it cannot be held accountable for straight up bullshiting and deception. The other half gets their news from like 5 massive conglomerates that, while not as actively ideologically, are very aware of their business and class interests. What do you have?

Well, one thing that would help would for a prominent, well-liked political figure with a large group of devoted fans to use their massive platform to explain it to people in easily accessible language. Like, for example, Bernard Sanders. rudatron posted:But they don't, and none of us (or anyone else on the left) has the power to frame the discussion that way, so it's entirely academic to talk about 'well if people understood This to mean This'. That's the frustrating part. One person on the left actually does have the power to frame the discussion that way, and change the way that people understand it, but they choose not to.

He doesn't. That's the harsh truth. Bernie Sanders is an island in the vast ocean of US politics, the political equivalent of a long lost relic. His popularity is important, but ultimately transient and contingent.

If I want competition in non-utility fields (and I'd consider healthcare definitely a futility) does that make me a filthy liberal or am I social democrat or what.

His policies don't matter at all and nobody likes him for them. ![]()

The problem is that most people don't even really put that much faith in democracy itself, and our cultural narrative continually reinforces the idea that most people are loving drooling idiots.

No. It's more like 20% of the population that actually gets their news from Fox News. You vastly, vastly, colossally overestimate how many people still watch TV nowadays. Much less cable TV.

The DNC is a largely irrelevant organization whose main reason for existence is to help presidential nominees collect extra large checks from big donors. It mainly deals with logistics rather than serving any coherent campaign function. It will never be an effective advocate for anything, because it is fundamentally hobbled by the fact that it has to be inclusive of every elected official in the party. It remains an utterly powerless husk. I was pretty clear during the process that I supported Ellison, but I don't think any of the candidates for chair were equipped to deliver the reforms the DNC needs.
