lol the safeway service desk here is completely unstaffed almost all the time and its hours are only like 10am-5pm. 1 person eventually shows up after there's like 10 people angrily waiting for western union or something and only after someone else has ran around the store to bug someone to come staff it.

trump will buy the bread himself and have it shipped to your local grocer. you don't even have to pay. just walk up and take it. the store bills the government themselves, directly, for all the inventory they go through. donald trump did this for you. he baked you this big, beautiful, golden brown loaf of bread.

Nobody can tell you the answer, but I would guess that the main driver is socioeconomic. Black people are still going to work because they're essential while white people are staying home because they're tech bros. Combine this with Michigan's packed minority cities and white sub-sub-suburbs and you get this outcome.

I served in the Navy. The good Commanding Officers - and there are a few - absolutely care about their crew. Those are the officers men willingly follow into battle, simply because they don't want to let them down.

I don't know the details, but it sounds to me like that C.O. was fighting for the lives of his crew. It's not like they have hundreds of ventilators onboard, nor is any Navy vessel equipped for this kind of pandemic.

The incompetence was likely in his chain of command, who apparently either didn't listen to his requests or were moving too slowly. If any if this is the case, then that captain has my absolute respect for leaking to the media to try to save his people.

Two components of this are almost certainly:

1) longstanding distrust of the rich white male medical apparatus among the black community (which is entirely understandable considering you got so much disinformation right now from assholes all over and the long history of racism ie slavery, Tuskegee experiment).

2) Systemic socioeconomic racism in health care towards blacks. If you dig into numbers their access to treatment and medical coverage is almost certainly way lower than other racial breakdowns. I mean, come on, everyone knows black people, especially women, overexagerate their pain and don't really need pain meds :downs:

There is also the fact that two of the largest population centers in the state (Flint, Detroit) are overwhelmingly African American and several other large cities (Saginaw, Benton Harbor) are also majority African American. Detroit has the largest concentration of cases and deaths in the state.

I mean, the facts you posted are also true, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

I'd like to see statistics from other locales to see breakdown by race and SES.

Median income of black people in MI is ~half that of whites. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that alone accounts for most of the difference. This country is designed to kill poor people from the ground up.

I’m not sure if those factors are relevant to catching covid disproportionately

racism is probably in there somehow but it doesn’t seem to apply to positive tests unless they are tested disproportionately because of their race which might be the story

the issue is SAR/EMS availability if something goes wrong. communities that have thing like backpacking trails tend to have like 2 ICU beds 100 miles away and can barely serve their full-time residents in normal times. the mountain towns in colorado have literally told everyone to stay away and they'll ticket them if they don't, not sure if it's legal but they REALLY don't want you there

In NYC poorer neighborhood like Queens are having high CV rates and deaths compared to Manhattan.

Mainly because WFH is only a option if you work in a white collar job, hedge fund, lawyer or computer toucher job.

Epidemiologists are able to predict life expectancy for specific neighborhoods for a reason. Being poor subjects you to worse food, higher stress levels, more crime, more workplace accidents, a lack of healthcare, etc.

We're absolutely going to see higher rates of infection and death among certain socio economic groups.

Like, the cortisol levels between rich people and poor are like night and day despite the widely accepted argument that people in positions of authority have more stressful jobs.

Poor people in Queen or the Bronx also have long commutes to rich white neighborhoods in Manhattan, more risk of catching CV from the mass transit enviroment.
