Didn't hear about that from the unbiased media, did we?

This is probably my favorite one. He was injured in a plane crash (NTSB link), and yes he was drunk. He also was a passenger - the pilot was killed. If it's now a crime to be drunk while flying in a plane, that's going to add some new terrors to those people who prefer to go through a flight passed out.

Hell, David Boon is going to probably be up on 52 charges from one flight alone if this ever goes to trial.

But is it actually scaled according to income? Or is it flat rate for everybody?

I'm Australian and I pay about 12 -15%, but I earn less than 30 grand a year. I (and maybe all Australians, dunno about high incomer earners) also get a significant amount back from what they took off me, at the end of the financial year.

It's average tax burden as a percentage. For example, you think your tax burden is 12-15%, but there's also the 10% GST in there as well, as well as excise taxes on Tobacco, Petrol and Alcohol. Therefore your tax burden even at such a low income rate is still going to be closer to 17-22%. For firmer numbers, in my case, I paid 22.3% tax last year, and then if you figure the 10% GST on my non-mortgage non-fresh food income that raises it to a fraction under 30%. Seeing how I'm earning almost dead on the the average wage for an Australian, and I didn't have to pay other taxes like Stamp Duty or Capital Gains tax last year you can see how the burden works out.

Australia has it much easier, as we have a national income tax, no state income tax and GST included in the price of every item, so rather then getting obviously hit up on every transaction, we get one lump of pain mid-year and then we forget about it. Which is why last election public opinion polls said Australians wanted higher taxes for more services, and why we have nowhere near the widespread anti-tax loon contingent as what you see here, thus bringing my post back on topic.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

How long has this email been going around for ? It hasn't been 12 months, it was 14 years ago, in 1996 shortly after Martin Bryant purchased two automatic weapons from a licensed gun dealer and killed 35 people and wounded 21 in a coffee shop at the Port Arthur tourist spot.

Sure, the Homicide rate in 1996 in Australia was 2 per 100,000, which fell to 1.2 per 100,000 in 2009. But the Homicide rate in the US was 7.4 in 1996, and fell to 5.4 in 2008 - most of the western world is in a 20 year period where homicide rates (expressed as a percentage of population) are falling, and there is no one single cause for it.

The great thing about crime statistics is that you can prove pretty much anything with them. Need them to rise ? Report total number of incidents, or target areas with high populations and compare them to areas with lower populations, or a different time frame. Need them to drop ? Choose it as a percentage, or exclude certain categories or go for certain ages or ethnic groups.

Basically, crime rates are the sluts of the statistics world.

Well, Matthew 5:17-18 means you just shut that argument down straight away - Christians have to follow everything in the Old Testament.

Latest FB about Benghazi.

This thing is feeding on itself.

The C-130's armament is pretty much whatever personal weapons are issued to the crew. There are a lot of these, deployed all around the world.

The AC-130 is a small production run aircraft (about two dozen in current service), of which two were sent to Libya but based out of Aviano in Italy. If they were on the ramp, loaded and ready for operations, took off at the exact second the attack started (9:40pm), ignored an inevitable recall order when the attack finished (11pm) and flown at their absolute top airspeed (260 knots), they would have completed the 1050 mile flight over Benghazi three and a half hours later, or two hours after the first attackers left.

This is also assuming that the Libyan government would approve the plane even going into Libya's airspace - the rapid response CIA team from Tripoli made it to Benghazi at 1:15am, but the Libyan government would not even let them clear the airport for 3 and a half hours because there was no threat and no mission plan - do you really think they would let an aircraft that fires 105mm howitzer shells downward into a urban environment just fly in and start shooting ?

On top of this, the AC-130 carries 14 crew and very fragile - when one was shot down by a single Iraqi soldier in 1991 using an 1970's era Strela 2 strict rules were put in place with regards to what combat area they could be deployed to. It is not a "fly over there and shoot guys with rifles" plane, it is designed as an anti-vehicle platform with very specific missions.

At any rate I think this really is just a bad year for the flu, I never get vaccinated just because I practically never get sick, haven't gotten a cold/flu in years but I got hit by it hard this year for some reason.

More specifically, the "Flu" that most people say they are getting, which is causing gastroenteritis and weakness, is actually GII.4 (Sydney 2012), and not even part of the influenza family.

Is there a single source I can refer to to debunk all of the Fake Moon Landing bullshit? My dad has been forwarding me these youtube videos and I'd really want to lay down something solid. Things like "there were multiple angles of shadows" and "there were 2 pictures of the exact same scene except one has the lunar lander and the other doesn't" and "why is there no blast radius from the thrusters" and "why are there only 20 or so moon landing pictures"

I felt really sad when he approached my brother and I to pitch it over lunch. He used to be a hardcore left activist back in his college days and was a huge influence in introducing me to Marx and Socialism, but he's also a 9/11 truther and now I'm afraid he might buy into this moon landing stuff if I don't try to debunk it hard.

Once you have sent the Clavius and Bad Astronomy sites, include this different take - a cameraman who's been working since 1978, and the other was a video engineer who worked in Television in the 1960's and 1970's. They put forward the counterargument that it was not possible to fake the Apollo 11 143 minute single-stream from the surface of the moon using technology that existed at that time, and the later video footage was even more impossible. Not the best video to open the argument with, as it's a bit unfocused, but still a nice finishing move.
