I also got to talk to Antoine afterwards - he's a really cool guy. I don't think he's in the band anymore, though. I really hope they release another album sometime.... even though Paralyzed seemed to get mixed reviews, I loved the hell out of it.

Diseased Yak posted:I swear, all the masturbatory, Dragon Force-esque solos in the world don't drive me to play guitar, but listening to some sludgey, down-tuned, face-melting riffs do indeed! Hearing masturbatory Dragon-force-esque solos makes me more likely to give up - simple, awesome sounding poo poo makes me want to learn how to play the guitar more than anything. I recently got a chromatic tuner, and last night, I tuned my guitar down to C, and found the tab for Dragonaut. I've never felt so motivated to practice guitar in my life!! I don't think I'll ever tune it back to standard. Also, it looks like sHeavy has released a bunch of their albums as free downloads. I'm downloading them now - I've always wanted to order their music, but never did, for some stupid reason. The link on their official site is http://www.sheavy.com/albums.html. edit: Holy poo poo!! Juaguocio posted:If any of you are looking for some easy stoner rock songs to learn on guitar, Fu Manchu pretty much have the market cornered on simple Sabbathy riffs. Anything off In Search Of... or The Action is Go is perfect for jamming along to. Seriously? Man, those were two of the first stoner rock albums I ever bought. Actually, my first real intro into the world of stoner rock was when I picked up "Carnival Bizarre" by Cathedral in about 1996... although at the time, I had just gotten heavily into death/black metal, and absolutely hated it at first, but it ended up growing on me like kudzu. I've been playing the hell out of that bass I bought last weekend (a $300 BC Rich Warlock 4 string), doing mostly scales and finger exercises, but I'd like to start learning some actual songs. Do most stoner rock songs need the bass downtuned like they do on the guitar?

I just found another band that releases their albums free - http://www.theweed.it/ - The Weed, from Italy. They have links to their albums under Discography. I haven't listened to very much, but I like what I've heard so far. Actually, there are a bunch at http://www.freemetalalbums.com/tag/stoner-metal (not , because stuff here is generally uploaded by the bands themselves). Sheavy and Wizard Smoke's albums were featured here, too.

Stoned Jesus - Occult Just picked up "First Communion" yesterday, along with Stormcrowfleet by Skepticism. I would have hated it so much when it first came out.. but I love it so much now!! EDIT: Now that I think about it, this isn't correct. I *would* have loved it at the time, and when I bought "The Carnival Bizarre" back in the day, I hated it because I was expecting something more along the lines of what Stormcrowfleet was, and not awesome Sabbath worship. "First Communion" is pretty good - only 40 minutes, though, and I wish it was longer. EDIT: After having it for a few days, and listening to it pretty much non-stop, I have to say it was certainly worth the $5 to Klicktrack for it... and I hope we get another one of these (but longer) in the near future. im_sorry fucked around with this message at 23:55 on Apr 30, 2011 |

But I still wish we could know how we went from that to something that comes out of the sewers. I thought the term "sludge" was totally appropriate, since it often sounds like it's slowly oozing out of someplace really horrible through your speakers, corrupting everything around you until it becomes as filth. And that's why we love it. Also, Juaguocio, thanks for the Haggatha link! I'm buying it right now. You know... you should do some Youtube vids of you jamming along to stuff off of the Hugenelk album.

I really like that song. Can you do "What in Tarnation"? I'm trying to learn the guitar, too, and being able to play along with the bass might help me understand what the guitars are doing, as well as helping me to understand exactly why the visible guitarist in the video does some of the moves he does on his guitar.

I just discovered Candlemass - I've always avoided them, since I don't remember any of their music from the 80s, but I remember their videos being terrible. I finally actually listened to "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", and I can't stop listening to it. "Solitude" is exactly what I've always imagined doom metal to be. I found it on Youtube, and don't want to be a mooch, so I'm going to probably buy it at some point, but what is the general consensus on Candlemass? Are their other albums this good? "Solitude" also seems easy to play along with on a bass tuned to D... or maybe I'm so awful I just *think* I sound good.

That's where it all started for me.. going downstairs while my older brother is watching the Power Hour on MuchMusic, and this comes on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfpYIPbrcdY (Not really stoner/doom/sludge, but they're apparently quite heavy stoners, so maybe it counts) I didn't actually get a copy of Dimension: Hatross until about a decade later, when it became the soundtrack to my microbiology class in 1999.
